Alas there are many cities I enjoyed visiting in the 1970s and 80s that I suspect would not appeal to me in the least in the current world environment. Cost being a part of it, but the multi-cultural society has overwhelmed the distinct sense of (regional) community that made the cities enjoyable. Some places will always be defined by their geography (Amsterdam's canals - sorry haven't been to Venice) but the Colombo of 1979 (or the Capetown of 1983) will never be found in 2016.
As a medium term temporary living space I think I would seriously rather Melbourne VIC to anywhere near London. Maybe I should visit the Greek Islands in summer or early fall. But that's not really cities.
YMMV due to the different directions we are wandering
