Is this the quiet season for new credit card offering with large bonus points?

which card was this for?

i've recently had success with the amex velocity card while holding other cards (but jumped on the 80k bonus offer only :()

Remember you get a free QF flight as well. Sure it is not 110K like Velocity but still pretty good if you are Qantas point collector.
 
Seems the quiet season has arrived again. Must be a normal annual lull. Decent offerings are hard to find. Either that or I've taken them all up already. Although usually just as I get the points from one and cancel there's another one to move onto immediately.

Just banked 70k NAB and 40k WBC (fee free), and applied for 70k Citi (I know you love them, fee $99 + $49QF), ANZ 75k (fee free).

So the usual majors have all had something out

Yep. St George and BankWest are well over due for decent offerings.

Good luck with CitiBank - hope you have the time available to chase them and to contact the FOS.

Third go with Citi, (they rejected me last time though), have never had to go down the FOS route for any action.
Agree needing to call them is a bit of a nightmare....but 70k pretty cheap is worth it.
Have just burnt 4 x J 280k's so need to start building the pile again...even using Citi

I suspect the new changes which will reduce the profitability of bank card divisions well also reduce the amount they are willing to spend on customer acquisition

I won't be eligible for StGeorge for another 7 months (or more given I just applied for the WBC card) but I've been waiting for BankWest to offer something decent for a while, especially that I've had their Zero card forever and am using it when travelling

You are indeed correct.

The banks are all trying to work out what to do now that the RBA regulations are kicking in. Qantas will be under pressure to drop the cost of points and are not likely to do so in the short term.

Expect to see the end of the "companion Amex" card as well as the end of multiple card types such as Gold, platinum etc. There is just no point in having a complex card fleet with a flat 0.80% maximum interchange and wholesale weighted average at 0.50% which now includes more merchant types.

The prevailing opinion is that those banks that remain in the rewards business will offer one super premium scheme card (with 0.80% interchange) and a reduced points earn of around 0.5 points per dollar at most on domestic spend.

The card market will change quite dramatically and will be simplified with a reduced card fleet. The remaining cards will have to provide other non FF benefits with perhaps a focus on overseas spending as this does not affect the wholesale weighted average. Overseas spend is less than 10% of total Aussie card spend so its not significant.

Card product managers will be very busy in the next 12 months or so and then will be looking for jobs once finished this exercise.

Before Citibank made their enhancements to the Signature card I used to go out of my way to pay in forex since I'd get 4 points / $. Loved to buy some miles then get another 5000 miles or so from the purchase.

So offering more points for the 3ish % conversion fee would definitely be tempting for those who travel a lot or buy a lot from overseas.
 
I dropped Citi Prestige in favour of Bankwest World for our last 3 overseas trips seeing there are great exchange rates and I get almost 2 QFF points per £ all day. Well actually Mrscove gets those points so I stay in good with her.
 
For annyone current on applications, I need around 95K QF or VA points. Which sign on bonuses are best at the moment? (Not including 120K sign up on AMEX?)

We felt the same way. If you take the $300 travel credit off the annual fee, and the free flight from the companion Plat Reserve, and the free flight from the Plat Edge that my partner took out with no annual fee, we figured we paid $0.002 per point. On top of that, the limits on the travel insurance seem to be one of the best, when we lined up all of the travel insurances together. Even the ACE policies all varied in limits, etc. After the first year will come the hard decision.
