Interesting experience a couple of weeks back on a SYD-MEL flight for a weekend away in MEL.
Boarded the A321 and stowed our rollaboard, noticed that the luggage bins seem shorter than usual to the point where the wheels would not allow the door to close. This rollaboard has been around the world as carry-on and never seen this before...
No problem, flight is half empty so just stowed it sideways. FA comes along when a passenger whines they can't find space for their bag and then pulls down our bag and says "this is too big, it will have to be stowed in the hold".
We protested pretty strongly given the flight was half empty and the bag already being safely stowed but no dice, the bag was taken off and we were told it would be "sent on the next flight". Get to MEL and baggage services says, nope it's not on the next flight will probably arrive by 10pm. Takes our hotel details and gives a leaflet tracing baggage and claiming $$ back for consumables (!).
Bag turned up later that evening finally by courier and we had our claim approved - not exactly sure what the point was of sending our bag on a later flight given that JQ was then up for the costs to: courier, send on second flight and for our consumable claim! No additional payment was asked for either for checking the bag in!
I have a sneaking suspicion this 321 was one of the former US LCC ones, that being the cause of the short bins - we had to laugh at the whole charade though.
