Hi,

Does anyone know if there are travel insurance policies that cover award travel? I am looking to book MEL-BKK-MNL-ROR via United for two in J and I'm a little nervous that if anything goes pear-shaped, I won't have any recourse. I'm new to the whole points thing.

Thanks all!

TID does and so does Australia Post. Thervare others too. There are often discount out codes about too, on here if you look around. TID seems to be used a lot by AFFers and there are threads on tvl ins to go back over.

It depends what you want the insurance for.

An award ticket is no different to a paid ticket - the airline has the same obligations to get you to where you want to go. So in that respect delays or cancellations are covered.

Like a paid ticket, there are few - if any - travel insurances that will provide you with replacement flights in the event your flight is cancelled.

If you get sick, your insurance (just the regular one, nothing to do with awards) will get you home.

Where insurance for points might come in handy is if you need to cancel for some reason and you can't get a refund of the points. However, many companies will allow a refund of award points. Also, if the insurance company flies you home, and you lose your points, it is unlikely the insurance will double cover you. If they fly you back, they won't also refund the points balance.

a bit late to the party...

Just bought World2Cover after being on TID previously. PDS for them says if you can't get a refund of the points then they refund you what the ticket would cost to purchase.

TID has tideaster code active at the moment which dropped it down to $338 for me.
World2Cover has yt20 active which dropped 20% and down to $196 for me.

TID does .

Out of interest how do you know this?

I just had a quick read through https://www.travelinsurancedirect.com.au/pds and I could not see where it states Flights from points are covered. It just mentions cost.

I note that the cost is capped, and so the full cost of J or F is not likely to be covered (though cancellation of flights from points normally does not cost a lot of $).

However it does not seem to exlude flights from points either.

Without it being mentioned in the PDS I would like to see it in writing somewhere that flights from points are covered (ie in CC TI it normally specifically states that flights from points are covered if they are covered).

Am I looking at the wrong PDS http://world2cover.com.au/assets/brands/tm/world2cover_top_pds.pdf as I cannot seem to find that statement?

Where abouts is the text located?

Thank you.

"Where an airline ticket was purchased using frequent flyer or similar air points, We will pay You forfrequent flyer or similar air points lost following cancellation of Your air ticket.
The amount payablewill be calculated as follows:
• if the airline will not refund Your points, We will refund to You the cost of the equivalent class air ticket based on the quoted retail price at the time the ticket was issued.
• if the airline will only refund a portion of Your points, We will refund to You the cost of the equivalent class air ticket based on the quoted retail price at the time the ticket was issued, less the value of the portion of Your points refunded back to You."

Recently, when I did my research for the new annual policy, I emailed all of the companies mentioning rewards bookings and asked some specific questions, just to ensure I had it in writing. I don't have access to thier exact reply right now, but I did ask if I were on a J or F booking and needed to change my flight home due to an acceptable reason, would I be travelling in the same class and TID's answer was yes.

There were a few companies that gave the same positive answer, eg Australia Post TI. I went w' TID due to their general reputation. I read a few thousand PDS pages.

There is a TID rep on here too.

Gday

Can anyone recommend an annual multi trip travel insurance policy with a maximum journey length of 180 days? Most top out at 60 days.

Thanks.

Pele.
