Hi All,

My NB brother is flying MLB --> JFK to visit me later in the year, and as a surprise I want to upgrade him to J as he has never flown it before. Is there a way to put in an upgrade request for him so that he goes onto the wait list as a WP priority instead of a NB?

Thank you so much!

You can put in a request for upgrading a family member through your account. Worth a try.

Do this by loggin on to your QFF account and going to the "manage bookings" page. Down below the list of bookings is an option to "upgrade a family member".

Of course you can do it, but the request will have the NB's status level attached to it.

No but the converse is explicitly listed as a Plat 1 benefit.
I doubt QF would make it a P1 benefit if it's available to mere WPs

Cant blame a gal for hoping. :p. Maybe it is cleverly worded though - so WP1 applying gives WP1 status to the lowly. That doesnt exclude Qantas applying the same rules to WP and below.

Sharing your points, sharing the benefits
If you use your points to request a Classic Upgrade Reward for an eligible family member, at the time their upgrade request is reviewed they'll have their upgrade processed at the Platinum One priority level, even if you're not travelling.

Ok. This doesn't necessarily exclude the same benefit for lower level status. Just wont be at WP one level, for obvious reasons.

It doesn't say anywhere that WPs don't get partner platinum, upgrades 7 days in advance, fee waivers, free fly ahead, access to row 1 and 4 on 737s at time of booking, free exit rows, MCA lounge access and all the other WP1 benefits, so I guess they get them too?

Heck, it doesn't say SG, PS and NB don't get all that either. Woo hoo! I guess everybody wins! :)

QF don't fly from Melbourne, Florida (MLB) to JFK, but I digress :p (nitpick nerd hat off)

re the P1 benefit - I used this last year for my sister on MEL-LAX. How it works is the upgrades are still processed in status order, so your P1's 7 days out, WP's 2 days, SG's a day etc (whatever it is, I forget lol) but when my sister's (NB) tier came up, I think 24h prior (actually it happened around 28 hours prior :D ) the upgrade is processed ahead of the other NB's. It was a nice surprise and she loved being woken up by the text (I did not tell her I'd put it in).

Anyhoo, when a WP, SG, etc put in the request it will occur with the other NB's - I think it is weighted then on time of booking and fare class. The P1 priority benefit is explicitly stated for P1.

win lose or draw, you will only find out by actually putting the request in.
is the J class looking very full?
I tried to upgrade Mrs GPH (on the second leg of LHR - SIN- BNE ) a few years back when the plane was (supposedly) 100% full and I even called the Plat line. i was told "Don't Hold your breath" so I said OK , if it works it works.
she was resigned to sucking it up in whY , when at the gate they took her boarding pass, tore it up and printed a new one, Guess who came home a very happy camper :-)

If you are not travelling but use your points to request an upgrade for an eligible family member, the upgrade will be awarded according to the eligible family member's priority, not the status of the Qantas Frequent Flyer whose points are being used. An exception is made when Platinum One members, though not travelling, redeem points for an upgrade on behalf of eligible family members. In this case the eligible family members will enjoy the same high priority as a Platinum One member.
