Does QF still allow bookings (both cash and award bookings) to be cancelled within 24 hours, no questions asked? And does this need to be done on the phone, or do online cancellations work too?

It's not "within 24 hours", it's "same day". So if you book at 2355, you only have 5 minutes to cancel/change!

I've only ever done it over the phone.

I don't think it covers cancellations either - it's more about correcting simple mistakes in a booking.

I can confirm it is just corrections. I booked flights to Melbourne, but for some reason selected completely the wrong dates. When phoning to correct, I enquired about cancellations (just out of interest) and was told it didn't cover that. The webpage states it is for mistakes as well.

I cancelled an award flight about 3 weeks ago on the same day with no questions asked due to a mistake I made.

I presume an exception must have been made for you as it doesn't seem to be what the midnight deadline is about. It states only change fees are waived. Cancellation fees are not waived.

One exception is for bookings made out of US. As far as I can tell, this means for travel booked through QF website, departing from US, or travel from American travel agent website for other flights (eg, Orbitz, for SYD-MEL).

  • Customers who purchase a ticket in the United States may cancel their reservations and obtain a ticket refund without charge within 24 hours of ticketing when purchase is one week or more prior to departure of the first flight in the itinerary.

Most defintely 'same day': Same Day No Mistake | Qantas

Changes which can be made:
What mistakes do we waive?
We are flexible at Qantas. If you have made an error while making your booking, we'll waive the service and change fees associated with correcting the mistake. For example, you may:

  • Correct the spelling of your name
  • Change time, day or month of your flight
  • Change your to and/or from destination
  • Swap gateways (eg - if you accidentally book London to Sydney, instead of Sydney to London)
  • Change fare type or cabin
How to reverse your mistake
Simply advise a Qantas travel consultant by midnight on the day of making the booking by calling ...

Was your flight out of the US?

The written rules are quite clear in terms of what's allowable and what isn't.

However as another example of an "exception" I was able to cancel a booking the next day (within 24hrs) no questions asked. In fact I recall the operator remarking that the booking was only made the day before putting it through.

I had the same experience a few months ago; at the time I was a bit surprised as I was expecting to be hit with a points penalty.
