Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Doesn't it annoy anyone that BM on Ch7 still can't pronounce the name of the five tines winner of the Australian Open and world's number one player?
I am kinda confused by this. I read your post - 3 commentators for this match - Bruce McAvaney, Roger Rasheed and Jim Courier.

Both McAvaney and Courier call him joke-a-vich
Both Rasheed and Umpire call home jock-a-vich

If you google how to pronounce Djokovic there are 2 sound clips - one basically for each above version - if you look at Wikipedia for Novak Djokovic it almost looks like Serbian pronunciation is jock-a-vit.

I use jock-a-vich - but either certainly doesn't fuss me. FTR I think BM is a star - who doesn't love his call of Cathy at Sydney Olympics?

From what I can try and ascertain using a pronunciation guide (not the IPA one) for Serbian and the Serbian spelling of his name, it is pronounced like...
  • Dj... is pronounced as in "endure" or like in "bridge"
  • o... is pronounced like "oh" but slightly swallowed. This is hard to describe; perhaps like in "score". Russians pronounce the vowel the same way.
  • k... is pronounced like in "kick". No surprises there.
  • vi... is pronounced starting with "vine" then the vowel is "week" (but kept short).
  • c... in this case is pronounced like "church" but kept sharp.

The first syllable is certainly not "joke" (rhyming with the yellow part of the egg). Then again, I have gotten used to people mispronouncing names. I make it somewhat an objective to seek to pronounce people's names correctly; not everyone does, and it is probably unreasonable to hold them to the same standard.

Not really.i get used to Aussie presenters mispronouncing names such as the ABC newsreader talking about storms in R Kansas.
Completely different. When everyone else uses a specific pronunciation, seems arrogant to keep to the mis- pronunciation for so many years. Forces all the other on air commentators to call him Novak so they don't highlight BM's inabilities.

Not sure how that all turns out, Sir Joh paid for my education. Even the kids are better at pronunciation and sounds. But I always had it as Djock-Oh-vic

In any case BM is the second biggest clown every, IMO. But my Brother in law has a great story about him from working in retail. Seems he is very good at remembering people even the bloke who sold him shoes in Adelaide 12 months ago who BM then invited into the Brownlow after party.

That's why he let journalists call him "Joker", because most just butchered his surname. However I suspect most butchering his surname are yanks. Seen many not even try to correctly pronounce a word even after being told how to pronounce the word.

Also Tomic's surname got butchered that he just let them say Tom-ick instead of Tom-ich.

Why are you guys so anti BM? No 1 caller for 7 in tennis, AFL and Olympics for such a long time - what get's up your noses?

Just have never liked him or his commentary. Plenty of Sydney based commentators that I dislike as much. BM has never had the cache of say a Norman May, in my eyes.

Joh never paid for anything, except his mates, then implement Gough's education policies.

But the rest I agree with.:)

And, while Simon played very well, finally Djokavic recovered from the incantation of boring four sets and took control. Maybe Roger has a chance! (Doubt it actually.)

Ah yes. Norman May. Very entertaining. I remember well, "There are two possible outcomes of this match. England could win, or Australia could win, or it could be a draw.":)

One interesting thing about tennis broadcasts. The main broadcast camera angle makes judging balls near lines rather difficult, or misleading. I'm sure there are quite a few people at home calling their guts out at the TV set whether a ball was in or out, when the camera angle they have isn't the best one to be able to make that kind of call.
