Have a return award for 4 pax. One of them needs to take the out bound leg earlier. The most effective way seems to be to just book another one way flight. Looking at the award fare conditions there is some suggestion that the return legs will be cancelled in the case of a no show. But that is not consistently shown in the conditions on the website. e.g. checking the fare conditions for a dummy booking does not include the cancellation rule for a no show.

Anyone have experience with one pax out of 4 on a booking not turning up? Is qantas likely to cancel the return leg for a)1 pax or b) for all pax on the booking?

I would recommend splitting that one passenger out of the original booking and making the necessary changes separately to the group (whether that means changing to a one way, or selecting a new outbound flight and revalidating/reissuing the e-ticket).

A nosho runs a risk of the system cancelling all seats. We can always link the 2 bookings for the one common flight.

Hope this helps. :)

Thanks for the suggestions Red Roo.
This is for a trip in 2 weeks, alternative award availability is limited. There is something the day before, but we're not going to fly the morning after a wedding. ;) I'm the dope who needs to get back to work early so splitting the booking is going to mess with seat selection for the rest of the family.
But cancellation needs to be avoided at all cost.

Does your tier status allow you to request a redemption seat?

Yes, that's an option. Thanks to your suggestions I think I'll try:
1) request release of redemptions on an earlier flight
2) separate outbound and return legs, and then separate me from the outbound. Then deal with me.

Again thanks. Your suggestions let me sort through the various options.

This has just been resolved. Booked awards (during the classic award earning promo last year) for the family to have a Sydney holiday while I also did work. The glitch came up because I thought I'd booked the 9:30am flight, and then proceeded to agree to give an orientation presentation at 2 pm on the day we fly to Sydney. Fast forward a month or two, and I discover that I actually booked a flight that leaves Adelaide 15 minutes after I was supposed to be in Sydney talking to interns. Departure was monday, and to complicate matters we had a wedding Saturday night family flying in from all around Australia that we expected to see on Sunday. Another complication is that SWMBO has the fear of flying and it is best to travel with me.

Anyway, available options were 4 award seats available Sunday morning, I buy a paid ticket with family flying as per the booking, or I split my flights and change to the 9:30am flight. The last 2 options then lead to the fear of flying alone factor. Anyway, I requested the release of 4 Y awards on the 9:30am flight, unsuccessful. This morning there was one award showing on that flight, making the split and change option viable. Anyway, I tried changing the booking one last time, lo and behold the 6am flight showed as an option. Lock it in Eddie!

Not the best timing but the kids get to experience my weekly grind. And I don't have to risk a no-show with potential cancellation of the return.

Thanks Qantas.
