I use a map to get the "big picture" planning between towns on long distance trips

Actually, when I'm travelling I have both GPS and a map or road atlas. I like being able to see the landscape and how the roads and rivers and towns are arranged.

If I have a GPS, it's fine for telling me when to turn and what lane to be in, but I'll arrive at some place with only the foggiest notion of how I got there and whether I might have taken a more scenic/historic/convenient route.

I like travel in all modes but still enjoy a good road trip. Not too keen on night driving any more and we tend to stop for more breaks these days.

Totally agree with Amaroo. This is an amazing Country. We are considering a trip to Margaret River next year to see the wild flowers, not the wine

Not quite.The Margaret river area is really good for terrestrial orchids-they are still wildflowers just not the showy display people associate with WA wildflowers.

This country has some amazing scenery and country towns can be stunning. Road trip is the best way to see it.

Hate driving. My maximum these days is from Brisbane to Rainbow Beach.
I get motion sick, so prefer to drive (esp. the bit from Gympie to Rainbow!), and I'd hate the idea of spending days driving, like I used to as a kid to get out to Winton, Maxwelton, Julia Creek.

Always up for a road trip. Only time constrains me to flying. Few months ago,Brisbane to Darwin solo over 4 days. Happy as Larry. Mrs Pineapple burned some points to ride J BNE-DRW. She was happy as Larry. To each their own.

Driving in Oz is particularly appealing due to lack of T-walls, insurgent threats, krazy Afghan driving, check points and 3 ton armoured cars on sh!te roads.

I enjoy driving and have done a number of driving holidays including Route 66 in the US. We are heading to the US later this year for a drive from Las Vegas to Lake Louise (Canada) and back down the west coast. I also enjoy driving holidays in Australia.

I always drive between Canberra and Sydney if I can. I find driving on that highway more relaxing than dealing with the airports at both ends (even though I get lounge access).

Perhaps I have joined the wrong forum and need to find a frequent drivers forum!

I love driving so I'm always down for a trip to anywhere. However, practically flying just makes more sense. Why spend 7-8 hours driving to Sydney to Melbourne (as I have done a few times) when you could probably just get a $99 fare which would be less than the cost of fuel and no risk of speeding and be there in an hour. Luckily I've been able to do drives in fairly good cars as well so that helps.

While overseas, however, I've gone for the road trip option quite a few times as you just get to see more of the country instead of just being connected point to point.

I would prefer to fly than drive anytime. Living in Ballina, I do not even drive to Sydney. There are a number of reasons for this:

1. There is much road construction to the south of Ballina, as well as bottlenecks.
2. There is about one serious accident or fatality a week on the Pacific Highway between BNK and SYD
3. It's usually cheaper to fly than drive if an overnight stay along the way is involved.
4. In SYD anyway there is little need for a car. Public transport is easy, especially with the seniors version of the Opal card.
5. Even if the destination is not SYD, I would prefer to fly rather than drive. I can always rent a car at the destination if I need to.
6. It's safer to fly!

I'd avoid the Pacific Highway too if I were in Kabul!
