The government is considering adding a tax of $5 on all domestic flights on $10 on all international flights into and out of Sydney in order to fund construction of Badgerys Creek Airport in Western Sydney.

THE Turnbull government is considering a tax of up to $10 per passenger in and out of Kingsford Smith Airport to fund construction of a second airport at Badgerys Creek.
Former treasurer Joe Hockey had proposed a $5 levy on passengers on all domestic flights in and out of the Mascot Airport and a $10 levy on international flights to raise billions of dollars needed to build the second* airport.
Treasury had modelled the levy and legislation was in the process of being drafted before the leadership spill last month.

In and out? That's a steep tax for someone just trying to make a living and cannot claim it as a valid work deduction.

So slug travellers Billions to fund it, then I assume sell it off to an overseas entity or superannuation group? Mmmkay. It's national infrastructure, not a play thing.

I wouldn't be opposed to paying a levy (to help partially with the funding) per flight in and out of Sydney. As long as the asset remained in the hands of either the Australian government or sold to an Australian company with the proviso that it remained in our hands. I suspect that there might be some public backlash with funding via a lottery considering it is a form of gambling. However once the airport was opened the levy should stop. Somebody has to pay for it...

Actually the levy in and out of Sydney sounds like a wonderful reason to use MEL or HKG.

Go for it Sydney.

Meanwhile I'll continue wandering

I will be very interested to see what Qantas think about this plan, I would imagine the lobbying/negotiation/arm twisting would have started in earnest? I don't imagine Rex will be a big fan of this either...

Radical idea but maybe the future owner could pay for it (as per basso's comments)

I do agree with the comment however according to some reports I have read the cost is reported to be between 6-8 billion dollars. (and know doubt they will blow that estimate) As I don't have any idea on the financing costs of such an adventure is there any Australian company that wants to invest that amount of money without any government backup or assurity.

Wasn't there a comment on Q&A (last Monday) to effect that maybe the guys that built Toowoomba airport should be allowed to handle the effort at Badgery's?

Then again that might upset the NSW construction unions...

Happy wandering

If it assists in earning a living ( ie a work related expense) why wouldn't it be tax deductible? Or do you mean something else by 'work deduction'?

I thought Syd airport had first rights over it. If they want it, they can pay for it.

They do. The article ( or the source) isn't talking about funding the the infrastructure to support the airport, are they
?

Its all unnamed sources and idle speculation at the moment, and zll superceded by change of PM but its possible that the costs of the public infrastructure supporting Badgerys Ck are being thought of, seems like a great way to make travellers pay for NSW residents infrastructure to me!

The edit feature isn't working again. Do excuse my spelling of Australia please.

We've been through this discussion in another thread. Cannot claim work related expenses as a full time employee.

No ... you have decided not to ... many in a simular situation as you quite legally claim such travel expenses, part or all.

Just because you have decided not to persue this does not mean others shouldn't/can't.

I only post contrary to each of your posts on this topic as you give an impresstion that is simply wrong.
