Greetings, hoping to tap into the collective experience here to ask if it is possible/likely to upgrade a flex economy ticket to business using QF points for a potential MEL-FRA trip next month on EK metal but with QF flight numbers? Thanks in advance. Mike

The QANTAS site is quite explicit that the flight must be a QANTAS operated flight, that is not a partner operated flight such as EK:

"You can request an international Classic Upgrade Reward for Qantas operated services with a QF flight number from 1 to 199~ on your ticket any time after you have paid for your ticket and received confirmation, up until 24 hours before your flight leaves."

If you have any status with Qantas then Emirates is very good to Qantas premium flyers. Upgraded both legs Adelaide - Dubai and another time, J to F Bangkok to Sydney.

So if I book, Perth - Melbourne - Auckland and the Auckland leg is Emirates, not by my choice I can't request a upgrade. Flight is booked through the QF site entirely in J

Ruins my plan to get F on my first ever flight on Emirates

Correct. We have the same issue here in Adelaide. No Qantas international flights out direct.

Thanks everyone - that unfortunately confirms my suspicions. I'm only SG status so just have to hope for that elusive op-up.

I don't mean this to sound rude, but even if you could request an upgrade with QFF on EK there's absolutely no guarantee that it would come through. If the plan was to get F, then the only real way to guarantee it would be to purchase it.

my suggestion may be to keep an eye out for ex-NZ sale F fares which tend to be fairly frequent(at least over recent times) and of good value (and can be booked as QF codes if wanting SC's for just a little more).

MrP was SG when he was upped from J to F! There is always hope. We are looking forward to Christmas Adelaide-Dubai. He is WP and I am SG and are booked in J. Hoping a little bit for that wonderful F cabin.

Correct there is no guarantees, but nice to have the option than not getting a choice

Well maybe the op up Gods will smile on you specially if you've picked some days where there's high demand to NZ you may yet get a nice surprise. I hope so!

(I myself have 2 EK J legs over the next few months combined with F on the way back, so I have similar hopes, though tbh the J product is absolutely fine for these short flights and is far superior to the QF product). Either way EK trans-tasman is a treat compared to the other options (though PER-AKL on NZ 789 in J would be a reasonable option, though it's a still a red-eye, as PER-MEL is to connect to EK, but at least QF648 will almost certainly be the new J config, which is pretty nice for domestic transcon).
