Well, as is my wont, I went for a little drive in the country today. My plan after leaving Sedona was to get out to the far E of Arizona to position to drive the Coronado Trail National Scenic Byway which runs through the Apache National Forest and abuts the New Mexico border.

So tonight I'm in very basic Springerville at the N end of the Trail. But rather than drive here direct, I headed SE through the Tonto National Forest region, then turned NE to get to the destination (why drive direct when you can take a rental car connect :).) A very large part of AZ seems to be Apache reservation or Apache culturally-linked - but the NW, around Sedona, is Navajo.

Interesting drive through widely varying altitudes and vegetation types that go with that, and landforms. AZ is certainly not all cactus-infested desert. The far E, where I am now is 7000 ft and grassy prairie-like vegetation; further W such an altitude supports dense Ponderosa pine forest, while the lower areas are the more classical arid areas with the vegetation to match.

Some pretty spectacular canyon country on the way at Salt River, along with the large Tonto Natural Bridge, a travertine (a kind of limestone) natural arch.

Via Show Low? yes it is a beautiful drive. We headed down to Tombstone from there.

What car did you get?? The US is renowned for awesome hire cars!! Please tell me you didn't really hire a turbo :(

Glad the pics are coming out OK, given that they are from my iPhone5.

Most of my previous TRs have been done after return and I've used pics taken with my camera.
