I am trying to redeem QF frequent flyer points for Y flights from Hong Kong to Vancouver on CX , but all the options I get with Qantas classic rewards are via New York,London or other cities . Does any one know if Cathay / Qantas make redemption flights available for the direct services from Hong Kong to Vancouver?

Yes they do. You will have to call up to get them. Use a site like AwardNexus (paid) or the British Airways Executive Club (free) to check availability before you call.

Although both the QF and BA sites sometimes (quite often) return phantom availability. Signing up to Japan Mileage Bank (free) will confirm availability for CX.

Thanks for that info. Luckily I haven't had any problems using Award Nexus for CX availability

Hi Peter
One of the options to find a classic award seat for non standard QF leg is to use the multi city booking tool. Try Sydney-HKG and second line HKG-Vancouver. Make it flex on dates and the next screen will give your available award seats. if you are so inclined tick the PE and Bus class and search. Find the flights, CHECK the CONNECTIONS and make the booking online. Saves a couple of dollars or a few thousand points.
You will need to be a little flexible on dates to get a good connection. Also note it will cost more in points as they are considered two separate flights.
I tried Oct and got a couple of available flights for your itinerary.

Just a warning Check your connections :), the booking tool will not awards check these for you. Conversely sometimes they wont let you book a flight as the connection is too tight and you can only do via the phone option.

Happy fliying
