Im just starting out on my points grabbing journey for cheap/free travel and have learnt a lot from reading through the pages here,....thanks
having said that I have learnt to look for extra ways to use the credit card for daily use, I have to pay my body corporate fees for an investment property I have and have always done it via Bpay and getting nothing from it. I had a search and couldn't find anything on the topic here so thought I'd ask if anyone has done this before?
I can pay via visa with a 1.65% charge and Amex incurs a 2.4% charge.
Is it worth collecting the points considering the fees on say a $1500 bill?

I have an altitude plat plus with 1:3 on amex and 1:1 on visa

Depends what you value points at, which is really up to you to determine.

This reminds me that through some fluke we used to (about 10 years ago) be able to pay our rent at Target, and they took credit card with no surcharge. Those were the days...

The answer is... it depends. What type of credit card is it? Does it earn Qantas points, or another "currency"?

Assuming it's Qantas, and you earned 3 QF points per $1 spent on Amex, then paying that $1,500 bill could net you 4,500 points for $36. Do that twice and you have more than enough points for a (almost) free domestic flight. I would personally go for it, but it depends how you value one point. Probably wouldn't bother paying with Visa at that surcharge.

Thanks for the quick reply, the card is a Westpac Altitude, so the three points per dollar are only 1.5 velocity or krisflyer points. but I'm looking at going to the Westpac QFF Black soon, as I want to save up for a RTW in J for a 25th anniversary in 2017

In that case, you'd be paying 1.6 cents to earn 1 Velocity point if paying by Amex. Probably not worth it in that case.

If you had a better card though (which it sounds like you're in the process of getting), I would suggest you go for it.

If you want to do a RTW trip in J, chasing QF points is probably the best long-term strategy. Specifically, 280K per person for a oneworld J award. :)

Having a quick look around there don't seem to be many options in cards for a better earn rate then 1.5 QFF per dollar on Amex, so I guess at 1.6c a point it may be on the expensive side, but since it is an investment property the credit card fees should be tax deductible which will offset the cost a little.
Thanks for the feedback it certainly helped clear up a few things.
