QF A380 out of action for 6 weeks

I really hope this doesn't mean I get a non-refurb B744 on QF17 SYD-LAX in a few weeks for which I have a J upgrade request.

It may mean your upgrade request has a lower chance of clearing since there are less J seats!

How so?

So far according to ExpertFlyer I appear to be getting a refurb B744 for QF17, although I'm not sure whether QF have got around to re-allocating aircraft for mid-May flights yet.

Where are the changed aircraft showing up, is it in the booking, or the schedule or what? I've looked for a couple of dates in early May and they don't show anything different so I'm not sure how we are supposed to find out. I've phoned, but I don't trust it now. It's disconcerting.

On a somewhat tangential point, is six weeks not quite a long time to take to effect a repair? It must be a particularly tricky or significant repair job, one would think.

(Of course, we want the repair done properly and not rushed.)

There are plenty of dates in the system showing an aircraft swap.
One that I know of is on the 20th May. I'm down for QF93 and naturally I checked and still shows an A380.
QF11 from Syd to LA is showing a refurb 747 on the same day. I think it looked like every 3rd day was a swap in aircraft for each departure point, if that makes sense.

Could they not wetlease a EK bird ( assuming they had a spare?)

It would be difficult as EK does not offer Y+ so it would be an issue for a start and I would imagine there would be a significant associated with wet leasing the a/c for a long period.

Much easier for QF to shuffle 747s around the network and manage it.

Any flight where a Qantas A380 or B744 was scheduled might be affected, either by equipment substititution or cancellation.

I have come across reference to some imminent JNB flights have been canceled likely due to the 744 being retasked to another route.

I see that a couple of Monday departures on QF63/64 have been cancelled in May/June.

Due to the shortage in long haul aircraft, QF has been operating non ER 744 to SCL this week.

This is is due to requiring an ER 744 to sub for the 388 that's out of action on the SYD LAX and MEL LAX rotations.

Yikes! Due to be on SCL-SYD at the end of the week. Are the non ER 744s with MK II beds?

There are 6 744ER's and 3 744's with Mk II.

There are two 4 class and 3 class with Mk I.

Look for the four class (no 1B seat) for first class lay flat seating.

One of the 4 class 747's is currently in HKG getting maintenance.

Looks like QF has used the 25 year old VH-OJI on the SCL route 3 times this month this far. Enjoy!

If it's any consolation, VH-OEH is operating the three and a half hour late Saturday night QF18 from LAX to SYD and is about to be at the gate in SYD at 1105 this morning. It is then forming QF27 to SCL at what the QF website continues to suggest is 1240 but my guess is more like 1255 or 1300. Unlike VH-OJI that is 24.4 years old according to www.airfleets.net, OEH is a relative baby at only 12.3 years of age. Not even a teenager, so be grateful for small mercies!

QF11 has departed SYD for LAX in the form of substituted B744 VH-OJT but the MEL to LAX QF93 is VH-OQK, an A388, so this is a rare case of MEL receiving 'preferential treatment' (haha) from the SYD focused QF.

Not really hindsight, many people on this forum have been scratching their heads about this for years.

Getting a bit Third World isn't it.

More that they did in fact order them however long ago, but then decided to paint them in that dreadful orange colour.

As a youthful 747 ER it has also been refurbished. Unlike OJI which has MK1
