Work has asked me to go to China in about 3 weeks time, any suggestions would be appreciated.

We are going there as guest of a supplier and will have a interpreter / guide with us at all times.

Looking for advice on places to eat, see, local customs, weather, things to avoid, tips etc

Shenzhen I'd stay and eat at the restaurants of the major hotels - Shangri-La, Langham, JW Marriott

Local culture or historical attractions are minimal given how new the city is so focus on going to new shopping malls for sightseeing - shenzhenparty.com for expats will be useful.

No get out and eat in the local restaurants, some amazing food. Beijing is a great place, it will depend on what part of the city you are staying. Do you have much free time? Give us a little more info if you know it
Whilst I have never been , I have sent many friends to the great wall and everyone came away amazed, I will return for this

Well in Beijing the Forbidden City and Tiannamen Square are must sees as is Xintiadies. Do see if you can get to the old Olympic stadiums as well.

Shenzhen, is a interesting place and I support not a place of Chinese historical significance, but good golf, Hong Kong is next door, spend a weekend in Hong Kong , great city. Get out and about where ever you are China will always amaze you

There's a series of city-specific online magazines a bit similar to Time Out called 'That's [insert Chinese city]' (as in That's Beijing, That's Shanghai etc etc).

The link to the Shenzhen one is here: That's Shenzhen

There may be some things of interest.

Unfortunately Shenzhen is not really known for anything much... my Chinese friends aren't so keen when they get sent there for work. Beijing on the other hand lots of tourist stuff to see as already pointed out... the Palace complex, Great Wall, street food.

As long as OP's visa isn't single entry, of course! Otherwise he might be spending more than the weekend in HK.

clazman i am currently ensconced in CA F Lounge in PVG - will give you some PEK tips mid week - pm me if you like with a little more info about yourself and I can then be much more specific.

The Badaling section of the Great Wall, about an hour or so above Beijing, is very well maintained and scenic. Ideally check it out on a weekday to avoid crowds. You'll get a lot of photo requests with locals there.

Most neighbourhoods have their own quirks. Street stalls are good for food experiments. Recommend the fried dragonfly! And local kids sometimes invite you to join them for street ping pong, which is always fun despite being a bit humbling.

Been given two bits of advice,

One, Australian credit cards don't work there, if so goes the Qantas travel card work?

and two injections are required (Hep and something) and malaria tablets

Australian credit cards work perfectly well in China whether for cash advances via any of the banks, or for point of sale.

The one thing to be very careful of however is dynamic currency conversion. Many businesses, including hotels and international restaurants/bars will automatically select you to be billed in Aussie dollars... even if you explicitly tell them you want to be billed in RMB.

sometimes you'll even get a credit card receipt to sign where they seem to give you the option to select RMB or AUD. Unfortunately this doesn't often work... if there is an AUD equivalent printed anywhere on the receipt... even as a 'suggestion', it's likely the DCC will already have been done.

businesses will also tell you they don't know how to prevent DCC, or to 'take it up with your bank' or that 'we can't reverse' a transaction. Some of those may be true... it depends how well the business has taught its staff how to use the CC machine... but if you are at a big hotel, or restaurant catering for the western market, you should stand your ground. DCC can be very expensive (5 or 6% or more!)

The key is to always ask to be billed in RMB at the time you hand over your card, and at any time you feel like reinforcing the point while the staff are swiping your card and entering in the total!

I would check whether you need malaria tablets... you don't need them for beijing and I don't know of anyone taking them for Shenzhen. hep A and hep B would be good recommendations, they are you will need to discuss with your travel doctor to see if they will be effective by the time you travel.

would a thousand aussie, be to much cash to take?

China is cheap.

While there are a few restaurants and boutique bars/pubs catering to the western market which charge equally what you'd expect to pay in Australia, this is rare.

I'd estimate you'd need about RMB300-500 a day to cover multiple taxis, food and drinks (including bar drinks). Just to give you an idea... good 'local' restaurants ('3 or 4-star' to give you an idea, table cloths, waiter service etc etc) will set you back about RMB100-120 per person for a multi- course meal (with multiple dishes for each course), including drinks. A top 5 star heritage hotel will charge you about AUD16 for a coughtail made with top shelf stuff. (And that's for a drink about twice the size we get in Australia with all our RSA rubbish.)

ALL CCs work in China - don't bother with cash - do you have Citibank Plus debit card? This is the best to access cash via ATMs which are 100% reliable and on every street corner. Never had injections ever before travelling to China - bear in mind you will probably come back with some flu type affliction - maybe from China itself or maybe from flight - no bother either way - you will get over it.

Clazman - you are going to Beijing right? Great Wall an absolute MUST - DO NOT MISS IT. Best 2 touristy things I have ever done in my life is visit and walk along Great Wall and helicopter trip down into Grand Canyon - I repeat - you are going to Beijing - DO NOT MISS A VISIT TO GREAT WALL - but bear ion mind it is basically a full day trip.

I think your time is a bit limited with work / socialising / short visit. Other touristy MUST DO's are Forbidden City - again a MUST DO but also takes most of a day to take it in. Then make sure you visit / walk over Tiananmen Square - we all know how famous that is - just quietly walking over it and reflecting is a very sobering experience - then walk to far end of square and visit Mao Tse Tung's / Mao Zedong mausoleum and see him quietly sleeping without a care in the world.

Whole bunch of other stuff to see and do but maybe you don't have time - Summer Palace / Temple of Heaven / Hutong visit god there is so much.

Shopping? You really do need to visit one of the fake markets and grab yourself a $10 Ralph Lauren shirt or $18 Armani or Diesel jeans. Unfortunately best fake market at Sunlitan - Ya Show - now demolished - it's gone. Next best was Silk Market - it's totally revamped now so nothing like it was. That leaves Pearl Market as it's still kinda as it always was - you just walk the alleys and negotiate the $580 they will ask for designer brand jeans down to RMB80.

Food 1 - As others have mentioned - Beijing Duck restaurant a MUST. You are meeting with business associates so they will no doubt already have this planned for you - go enjoy as it is an experience you will remember forever - the whole production of a full duck carved at your table is just fabulous. No doubt your business associates will have other banquets etc planned for you - go enjoy them - sample the food - if you like it then eat it - if you don't like it just pick away at the bits you can stomach - worst case scenario when you go back to your 5* hotel at night within 200mts there will be a Maccas or a KFC where you can top up if the Chinese food is not to your liking. Plenty people do this as Chinese chinese food totally different to what you see here - and a lot of it is very very spicy so just be careful.

Food 2 - you really need to consider your toilet habits when planning your day - as you will be staying at 5* hotels eat a very big breakfast and fully utilise toilet facilities in your hotel before you leave. ALWAYS - ALWAYS take a spare roll of toilet paper from hotel when you go out each day to visit factories etc - many factories only have squat pans and not actual bowls to sit on and toilet paper unheard of in many factories so be prepared. You will probably be offered lunch when visiting factories - again be prepared - I always check toilet facilities before partaking in lunch - if no real toilet I do not eat lunch as I do not intend to be caught short with only squatting pans available. The last thing you ever want is to eat something dodgy at lunch then no toilet or toilet paper available - it only happened to me once - never again.

I have mentioned access to cash - debit card will work in most ATMs and they are every where. Clazman China is an amazing country full of wonderful people - it has an amazing culture. Undoubtedly you will have way too little time to enjoy the amazing range of experiences available to you - go and enjoy it - do not be afraid to try everything new but as always common sense must prevail in all situations. Sorry I cannot help with any Shenzhen info as I rarely go there - if I can help more please ask away.

The food thing I think you need to pay be ear. If they have specially prepared a lunch for you at a factory or venue I think it might be hard to avoid.
