Planning to use Viber for mobile phone calls home (in Australia) while in India in June/July 2015, travelling through the western Himalayas -- Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh and Kashmir. How widespread is wifi availability? Is it typically free in cheaper hotels or is there likely to be a charge? Thanks for advice.

Not sure about that company but the place I stayed near Shimla advertised free wifi like many hotels but it frequently didn't work (albeit during Diwali so not sure if it is a regular problem outside that time). Also there were fairly regular rolling blackouts, which was the same in Nepal so I suspect most of the Himalaya region, which knock it out for a few hours a day.

During treks there was no wifi access anywhere so it depends a bit on where you are staying. Most cheap hotels in the towns and hill stations will likely advertise it with the caveats above.

We did a trip in 2013-Included Haridhwar, Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Chandighar, Shimla, Naggar, Manali, Dharamsala & Amritsar. We were in mid range hotels and all had wi-fi ( only in sitting areas in 3 of them). As an alternative our driver/or us could have organised a sim very cheaply. There were some roadside Subway style shops but I don't recall them advertising free wifi.
