OTOH us retirees that pay for our own flights could equally well sit at home and watch the grass/sheep/kangaroos/others grow. But that doesn't earn points (or status). Though once in a while children like to be visited (babysitting?).

So what is the category if you decide to fly from Alpha to Bravo. Direct Y is $200. Alpha to X to Bravo is an extra segment and a thousand miles further. And J is $300. Is that a bit of personal luxury or a demeaning bit of point/SC chasing? PS. This is a real example.

Or how about you are in city Delta. The round trip fare back to Oz (in Y) will be $1000. The one way to city Foxtrot is $200 and the round trip fare to Oz is $700. You don't really want to go back to city Delta anyway. Saving money or playing easy to get?

Hopefully there will be some proper insights without too much wandering

Fred

Back in the AA special offer days, I seem to recall a trip from St Louis to San Diego via Narita...

That would entirely depend on your definition of status run.

From memory I did something like BNE-SYD-SIN-BKK-TPE-HKG-MNL-HKG-TPE-HKG-MNL-HKG-TPE-HKG-BKK. I thought it was 13 sectors in 3 days but I am getting 14 sectors. Perhaps I didn't count the BNE-SYD sector.

From memory I also did something like BKK-HKG-TPE-HKG-MNL-HKG-BKK-SIN-SYD-BNE to get home and back to work. I don't consider it a status run as I incorporated into current trip. Flying is a hobby.

From memory I also did something like BKK-HKG-MNL-BKK-SIN-SYD-BNE with part CX paid airfare and part Diamond Cub redemption.

From memory I also did SYD-ADL-ASP-AYQ-PER-BME-(KNX)-DRW-GOV-CNS-BNE-SYd as an award although the BME-KNX-DRW Air Northflight was changed to a direct BME-DRW flight.

The was also the epic Queenland milk run mining towns tour in 2008 but I forget the exact itinerary.

I love flying. Most people including mum don't understand. I don't really care....

If you did all that sitting in whY - you have well and truly accrued "Endurance" status...

The trip around Australia was economy. The others are part economy part business class.

I also did FRA-HEL-GVA-HEL-BRU-LHR-HKG-SYD at the end of an economy oneworld award in a few days.
