Does anyone remember the days of Ansett when...

What is CP? Google throws up Canadian Pacific but it stopped in 1987

CP would be Compass (USA airline, spun off from Delta). Not sure that helps though given the context of routes it was in

CP in this instance refers to Canadian Airlines, which left the alliance in mid-2000 having been bought by Air Canada.

CP comes from its original name Canadian Pacific Air Lines.

What Sam said. Canadian Pacific aka CP Air then morphed into Canadian Airlines Intl who operated BKK/HKG (then on to YVR I assume). The AY flight also did SIN/BKK/HEL but had traffic rights to fly SIN/BKK in isolation like the CP flight BKK/HKG.

I mentioned this in another thread awhile back that in 1999 QF had a 100K bonus points offer if you flew on 5 One World airlines between certain dates so when I went on a holiday to Asia I did the following routing: SYD BA SIN AY BKK CP HKG CX SIN QF DRW which went a long way towards purchasing 3 of these (had to kick in 12.5K of my own points).

I either had two of three of these fares nested at the same time so used various fares to position to/from certain cities along the way so it's kind of hard to remember where one ended and another one began!

AY used to fly SIN-BKK?

I remember one of the tickets would've been over had I flown SYD/BNE at the end so I booked SYD/OOL instead. Got to SYD Airport & asked if it was possible to fly to BNE on OOL ticket. It was so I was put on the next BNE flight.

Gotta love paper tickets!

One of my favourite memories of AN was just before their demise I booked a surprise European holiday for the wife in J. Booked it is August and I remember telling the AN booking guy "don't send the tickets yet, send them closers to the date in November"! Of course that September hit, 9/11, AN gone and my own company Pasminco in administration. That was back in the days of paper tickets and it was on SQ. Talking to SQ, they could see the booking number, ticketing etc, but as we did not have the physical paper ticket it was bad luck, no trip. We started to write it off as realising other people had lost their jobs and were in worse state, when we received a plain envelop with stamp (not one of the those auto stamps), hand written address and no note, just the tickets.

My thoughts have always been that some AN staffer just sent a whole heap of them "off their on bat" so whoever they were, a belated thanks. Always remember the tone in the voice of our SQ contact when we called her to say we had the tickets; it was almost "bugger - we have to honour it"!

Mmmm family member had Diners club card.... Over 1million in points gone :( bad memories from this thread

Luckily the AN staff got almost all their entitlements, although it took a long time.

I was most annoyed because I had just got platinum the first time, about a week before it collapsed!

No wonder Ansett with bust lol.

My parents gave my sister & brother in law a wedding gift in 1998 of around AUSTRALIA on that points fare. Haha.

Golden Wing membership wax insanely cheap and QF OFFERED very reduced Qantas Club memebership Did lose 80k but worse was being 10 years behind on earning QF Status. There was no direct matching after the collapse.

My fav was just having over 200,000 points and trying to get to Europe. How?
paris and London were 128k. So was Rome, Germany and ZURICH. Dashed hopes.
What about Vienna. ? That's only 100k. Great that could work!!!

how do u get to Vienna? Oh SQ VIA ZURICH
LMAO.
So duly booked and had the late honeymoon trip with baby in tow. It was great. I'm pretty sure there were some taxes!
and a stopover in Singapore and made a couple of acquaintances from the SQ Flight crew. Babies whisked away and passed around. ooooh he's so cute!!
also an impromptu mid Olympic Games Sydney trip on points that was like booked 2 days out LMAO Was great to soak up the atmosphere even only for a few daze.
I did keep some old boarding passes. They're an amusing memory !

I did a round-Australia, taking my family on points, PER-AYQ-ASP-CNS-HTI*-BNE-SYD-PER in about 1995. (*Can't remember the exact order of flights between CNS & BNE). Great value.

Subsequently, I had many a long weekend away on AN FF points (DRW, KNX, EXM, BME) while the marriage was going south.

Also, I always had a stock of upgrade certificates (remember those? - valid for one year) stashed, and made a point of arriving early at the Golden Wing lounge, so UPGs between PER & points E and return were constant. OMG, some of those MEL-PER flights on Friday night were GOOD. The GW in MEL was a swim-through on Fridays.

Lost 300K points in the collapse - and I was on the last flight MEL-PER the night they went bust while we were in the air. Very sombre mood and only a plastic cup and water in J all the way as it was clear what was going to happen.

Try losing 1.3 million, but I was never out of a job like the AN staff. Have no bad memories over it....

I lost a heap as well, but no bad memories about it. I didn't lose my job. I'm now kicking myself though as I didn't even know these rewards existed........was I the only one who actually bought tickets?

I'm in that group that still buys!! I always have that policy of building up points (and assets) while I can still pay and use them in retirement et al. But seem to get caught all the time; AN gone, QF devalued. Hindsight, bloody hindsight, why don't they teach it at school!!!

If most teachers knew about hindsight they probably wouldn't have gone into teaching in the first place :)

But yes, FF points are not a good long-term investment. Earn and burn, earn and burn...

When I was a student (Primary and High), my grandparents would fly me to Sydney from Darwin twice a year. So I would fly the longest way to Sydney, which was normally DRW-ASP-ADL-MEL-SYD or DRW-GOV/GTE-CNS-BNE-SYD, in doing that each time I would then have enough points to upgrade my flights to business each time, but when I would have them booked, the Ansett Travel agent in Darwin would always ticket them in J class, so I would get the 8k in points needs for the next trip.

Those were the days of 8K point to upgrade from Y to J, but saying that my grandparents would pay $600 for a return ticket each time for me, an now when I do the trip every month or so, I only pay $400-500 return.

Was the AN flight number the same for the multi sector routing, hence being able to upgrade to J for all flights for 8K points or did they allow multiple flight numbers on the same date for an 8K upgrade?

From memory, it was multiple flight numbers on the same day, as back in the 90's there was no direct flight between DRW and SYD (that I can remember), it was always either via BNE, CNS, ADL, or ASP.

I remember Qantas had a similar award when I first joined QFF in 2003.

I had set my sights on it and came up with a brilliant itinerary where I could visit 4 out of 5 mainland capitals with an overnight transit in each and then they pulled the plug.
