Hi all,
I’m looking at catching QF 15 from Brisbane but I’ll be flying up from Sydney so am keen to know how much time I’ll need to transfer from the domestic to the international terminal.
QF15 leaves at 10:25am and I’ve got the options of the following QF domestic flights:
0605-0735
0635-0805
0705-0835

Obviously the earlier I fly up, the more margin for error, but then there’s more time sitting around on my hands (I’ll be saving my PS QC pass for LAX J lounge.

Many thanks.

I don't know much about BNE Dom-Int transfers, but I'm pretty sure that the LAX J lounge is a OneWorld lounge and QF lounge passes are not accepted.

Personally I would do the 6:05

To get from domestic to international you have a choice of train or bus .... so would allow 30 minutes worst case scenario

If you are not going to use the lounge then even the 7.05 flight should be ok but I would keep it as back up and go for the 6.35 just in case something goes wrong in SYD.

From my limited experience (once), I was given <100 mins to transfer from DOM to INT in BNE and it went smoothly with a short wait for the T-bus and a quick trip between the terminals. At the time of the morning, the bus comes every 10 mins so you don't have to wait long if you miss one.

If I was you I would take the 7:05 flight which should you plenty of time to do the transfer.

+1 for 6.05
This should mitigate the risk of any unexpected delays in Sydney as there are 2 other later flights for you to take.
Additionally, I have stood in a painfully slow security line at that hour of the morning in Brisbane with a lot of on-edge people surrounding me. A reduced waiting time is not worth the potential stress.

I regularly do the commute from domestic flight to international flight in BNE with a stated 1 hour 25mins between flights. Managed to make it on Monday even with a 20 minute delay out of SYD.
Personally I'd go with the 7:05 flight, but for piece of mind would suggest the 6:35 which gives well over 2 hours transfer.
Assume you're flying outside of daylight savings?

It is very easy...

I would do the 6.35 just to take the stress out of it.

Thanks for the replies. It looks like I should go for the 0605 flight.
It'll be in August so I've got no idea where we'll be up to with daylight savings. :)

I'm dissappointed to hear I may not get lounge access at LAX lounge, though. Maybe I should blow my pass on Brisbane's J lounge?

Damn, you're right. Qantas Club members get access but it seems my PS complimentary invitation won't get me in.

Lounge Locations | North America | Los Angeles International Airport Tom Bradley Terminal | International Business
Note: Complimentary invitations cannot be used in the Los Angeles oneworld lounge.

It seems I can get into QF's lounge at JFK (Galleries Lounge) which should be fine.
Lounge Locations | North America | New York JFK International Airport | Associated Lounges

I would take the earliest flight possible. Delays eat into the connection times and what should have been a comfortable connection could end up being a nightmare.

The T-Bus would be a much better option than the train departing every 10 minutes during peak times. It's free with Qantas boarding pass.

When checking in at SYD Domestic go up to the international connections counter so they'll give you all your boarding passes and through check your bags to LAX (or beyond if you have a connecting US domestic flight).

On arrival at BNE Domestic proceed to the ground floor and exit the building. The stop for the TBus is directly out the front of checkin (you don't need to cross the road) just look for the orange sign which will have the bus timetable on it.

It's about a 5 minute trip to the international terminal & you'll be dropped off on level 4 which is departures. You should already have your green departure card given to you with the boarding passes so just make your way down the escalators to level 3. You don't need to see QF checkin at international.

Security will weigh your hand luggage & try & keep it to 7 kilos. Customs is immediately after security after which you'd turn right for gate 86 which is the last gate to the right and always used for QF15 departures.

I'm dissappointed to hear I may not get lounge access at LAX lounge, though. Maybe I should blow my pass on Brisbane's J lounge?

What about getting the 30 day Admirals Club membership for USD99.00 that covers both QF Lounges and Admirals Clubs so you could save your guest pass for another time and knock off as many lounge visits under the 30 day scheme.

Thanks for the replies (including the suggestion of the Admirals Club membership).
In the end, I decided to fly via MEL and will stay over night and catch the A380 to LAX.
I've also just got an Amex card with two Priority Pass invitations so I'll probably look at using those in the US as well as the one QC pass (which I might use in MEL's J lounge).

Thanks again.

They (QF) will scan your passport data (<<<line) page in SYD, for the dom flight to MEL, yes, even though its a dom flight, linking it to an int flight, the passport data page scanning starts with that dom flight, this means as soon as you arrive in MEL, you get to bypass anything QF there, and just go into int security, then passport control.
Even if you have done OLCI, you still need to have your passport scanned by a person, or by the pole/DIY booth.
SYD check in should also give you an OPC so you can fill it in on the flight from SYD - MEL, saving you time in MEL.
I have gone ADL - MEL - AKL once, ADL - SYD - CHC and WLG, (MEL dom - int no fuss, easiest airport (as mention on here)) to transit dom to int, vv takes a bit more time, but still easy.
Enjoy the trip!

Sorry I should have clarified. I arrive in Mel at about 2300 and fly out at 9ish the next morning so I'll be spending a night in one of the hotels at the airport. While they're booked together, I assume I'll be able to grab my bags when I arrive in MEL and then return the following morning.

Paul, now that one is a Poser indeed.
Would be nice if they or you had booked a room at the ParkRoyal... and yes, I have tried their day rooms.

You will need to collect your checked luggage & take with you to your accommodation as they"ll only be tagged to MEL due to it being an overnight break of journey within Australia.
