When applying for plat charge we mentioned that we would like to cancel our old amex (the low interest one) - instead they mentioned something about a free upgrade of the credit card with the annual fee waived for the life of the plat charge ( can't remember exact details ).

I was wondering if people with the plat charge have been offered an additional free amex credit card for the duration of their plat charge?
If so what were they offered etc etc.

At this point thinking of going with Amex Plat edge - that way 3x points for groceries and 2x for petrol - will give a lot of extra poitns a year.

I think it's standard with Amex now to have a free companion card when you hold a charge card.

I've got the platinum edge alongside my charge card.

I've got the platinum reserve card, however I believe a platinum edge and platinum charge is a better combo.

Don't think they allow the edge with reserve anymore, except those who are grandfathered on it.

Is the Platinum Reserve still available? I don't see it listed on the AMEX website.

No, the only Platinum Reserve cards still open for application are co-branded ones associated with certain professional associations.

However, if you already have the Platinum Charge, as cji003 said, the Edge is a better combo as it gives you 3x at supermarkets, and the Charge gives you 3x at restaurants. The Reserve gives you 1x at supermarkets and 3x at restaurants. The only advantage the Reserve would have is the free flight distance boundary is greater than on the Edge.

OK. Thanks.

I recently received the Platinum card and still have the Ultimate card and am looking at (companion card) options.

If you have the Platinum Charge, you can still ring up their service centre and ask for a companion Platinum Reserve application. But I don't see any point of doing so as the rewards structure is exactly identical to the Platinum Charge.

Just called up and was denied the platinum edge card as a companion card. They said I would have to pay the $195 fee. Even after I said that people had this waived they still said it was not possible. Instead they said I could get the platinum reserve.

Can anyone comment on this?

Just apply for the reserve (the free flights go further...for a start) and pay $195 for the edge so you get an extra tix/points earning potential as they all go into the same account.

Actually... they told me that plat edge is not the same account and can't pool points. For that reason they said amex reserve was better. I was thinking. yeah right.

The rep could be right, IIRC a year or two ago people were saying there's two different pools for the cards. Mine was setup 4 years ago so things may have changed.

The Edge seems to be the best companion card for me.

That doesn't sound promising for my plans.

The Reserve is not showing on the AMEX website.

Just rang AMEX. Confirmed that the only companion card offered with the Platinum Charge cards is a choice of either the Discovery card or the Reserve card.

The Application for the Reserve can be mailed out as it's no longer available through the website, but is still available if you have the Platinum Charge.

Seems to be an unpublished benefit now, as the free companion card doesn't seem to be listed here: https://www.americanexpress.com/au/...v=au_menu_cards_pc_plat_rcp&filter=platseries. With the Reserve now no longer on the Amex website, how are we supposed to look up the T&C for the free flight/hotel etc.? I don't see why they don't just roll the benefit up into the Plat Charge card and not make us hold two accounts.

Because one is a Credit Card and one is a Charge Card.

I'm not sure how that's relevant.

Surely they could just offer the free flight to Plat charge card holders (in lieu of holding a free Reserve CC), and also offer the benefit of the free flight to the standalone Reserve card holders.

If you are saying that holding the Reserve offers the benefit of having a CC card, then that could still be an option for those that want it. For the rest of us that just want the free flight, there's no need for an extra account.

To be fair, Amex seems to offer "credit card" like facilities on the charge card anyway. Any purchase over $200 can be paid off over time (with interest), so even less reason to hold a standalone Amex CC.

I wish they would offer the free flight for Plat Charge. But instead they offer the Plat Reserve. Plat charge have the $200 travel credit which isn't really a benefit seeing they increased the price of the card a year or two ago!

I don't bother carrying around my Reserve. Also note you have to call the Reserve number to redeem the flight. Not the charge card concierge or travel team. The service from AMEX reserve is sorely lacking in comparison - long hold times, not 24/7 etc...
