Free Amex credit card with Amex Plat charge?

Really :?:

Look at it from the AMEX perspective. You now have two of their products and I'm quite sure that a lot of people would then use the Credit facility. Not everyone pays off their Credit Cards every month.

Plat charge card already comes with a "flexible payment option" aka you can pay anything over $200 off just like a credit card. So, if you really want to pay exorbitant interest rates to Amex, you can do this just fine with the one card.

Howwver, you now have a card with a credit limit that you may have to declare when applying for a competitor's card-if this makes it less likely that you would make that application Amex has gained

The complementary reserve sits in my drawer for 340 days a year, but it does come in handy in two occasions.

First is when they have Amex promos like shopsmall - you can obviously double tip (or triple/quadruple dip if you have other Amex cards). I remember they had an offer where it was $50 credit from Myer I think and I ended up buying gift cards across all my accounts and essentially got a new iPad Air 2 for half the price.

Second is when I'm travelling on holidays with a friend. Because the reserve and charge essentially has the same points earn structure, you can sort of track your spends by charging all of your own expenses on one card, and shared expenses on the other (can be work reimburseable expenses too). So instead of having to itemise which items are something you need to split with a friend and/or chargeable to work, you can just take the whole account and claim it all at once.

That's pretty much what I use my reserve for.

I think it's standard with Amex now to have a free companion card when you hold a charge card.

I've got the platinum edge alongside my charge card.

Hi albyd - was this a recent (relatively) addition or have you held the edge for a while? - from reading it seems that achieving an edge companion alongside the plat charge is nigh on impossible. (obviously not entirely)

Just apply for the reserve (the free flights go further...for a start) and pay $195 for the edge so you get an extra tix/points earning potential as they all go into the same account.
Hi mini2 - do you have a link that shows the flight route availability? Keen to see if NZ still features. Cheers

Hi Blockers. You're right, the platinum reserve is the "free" companion to the platinum charge. That was confirmed to me this week when researching the platinum charge.

To clarify, I have the gold charge which I don't use anymore but keep so I can have the platinum edge for no annual fee. I've had this arrangement for maybe 18 months now.

Thanks albyd - I was holding out hope there was some cunning work around :) alas no... ha ha
