The big problem I see with MYKI is they have tried to make it too complex keeping with the zone fares. To make it easier they should have scrubbed them and made it by distance, or time or both. But in saying that the London Oyster card works on bus and trains with little problem. And the other wonderful feature is how slow it takes to register when you try to scan! I have never seen any other system that is so slow and often you have to do it a few times to register.

Why could they just not buy the London or Paris or Tokyo etc, system?

sticking to zonal fares seems a bit redundant with electronic ticketing. will be relocating there soon so will get to experience it first hand! The Opal card in Sydney suddenly doesn't seem so bad

If you live and work in the city, trams will be FREE (so I heard)!

The Dutch have a smart card ticket system that covers the entire country. Zone based. They could have used that as a base for Myki which is meant to cover the entire state.

The problem with the Melbourne trams was that they kept losing connection to the Myki servers. That's why they made the zone adjustments for trams.

I have heard this before, but as you point out with the Netherlands, they have trams with no problems. And MYKI had troubles with buses... And today it took me three swipes to log off after catching the train to Nunawading.... SAP and the lemming mentality all over again
 
And another thing, while Im coughing about Sydney buses. In Japan I remember being able to look at the bus shelter board and the GPS would keep track of the bus so you knew how close it was to your stop. Sydney - nope.

Perth's CAT buses do that.
 
So we all agree. Sydney's public transport is cough and Victoria's Myki needs an upgrade.

For some bizarre reason, Adam Savage found the Sydney public transport to be better then the SF BART/Muni. o.O
 
FWIW, I think the (relatively) new Gautrain network and Gold Card system from Tambo Airport - Sandton - Midrand - Pretoria etc is really surprisingly good.
 
The more I've travelled overseas, the more I realise how carp our Myki system is. I would be very interested to know how many taxpayer funded expeditions (read junkets) our state & federal pollies have taken over the years researching this, and how they can justify what we actually ended up with :confused::shock:

Let's be real: Myki isn't perfect but I can't think of a single mass transit system in the world without some kind of flaw in the system.

There are certainly some great tricks to be picked up on (that a junket would be perfect for!).

For example, Japan's exit gates are always open to avoid congestion, and only close on you if your card is invalid/out of cash.

Have been since the start of 2015. There is signage about the free travel zone and announcements on board. Apparently beggars are now aggressively targetting passengers in the free city zone knowing that there are few if any ticket checkers on board.

I don't see Japanese system as a flaw, but what I do see with MKYI is the time it takes to touch off and on. I've seen no other system in the world take that long. And I don't see "flaws" in other systems, Seoul is simple, quick and easy. Top up anywhere. Even the BTS, albeit small works fine and even in KL the system is seamless across the system
 
The Zürich tram system worked very well for me, smooth, on time and the best scenery
 
MYKI is a joke. If it wasn't for the cost, any decent government would have scrapped it and started again. It would also give them a good chance to look critically at the fare structure, which has changed pretty dramatically since the Metcard days.

Myki is based on making money.... They know majority of people won't spend time following up inaccurate charges!
Also the touch on and off is bloody annoying it should be touchon at start and if you use a bus,tram,train just touch off on destination....its setup for stats....

The Canberra MyWay requires touch off.
There is only the base fare, no zones, no distance based fares. Fare amount is based on concession holder/student/normal, and peak/off peak.
The only possible reason to require touch off is to get stats on where/when people get on/off. (if you don't touch off, it charges the more expensive cash fare).

Though MyWay has an easy way for discounts. If you recharge the card yourself via BPay, your trips using that money are 5% cheaper.
 
What really amazes me is why cities always seem to want to redevelop the wheel from scratch. Why do that, with all its problems and false starts, when there are plenty of excellent schemes in operation elsewhere? So maybe you have to adjust your fare system - so what? That's got to be simpler than going through the horror that has been the development of Opal and Myki.

How else do you justify overseas junkets on Business Class and 5* hotels ?

How else could the consultants send their offsprings to private schools ?

Like you, I have been amazed to see the perpetual reinventing of the wheels.
 
At least we have public transport.

Some cities do not have public transport or very limited public transport.
