Why are there no QF FF Classic flights from Australia to HKG or Japan for the end of the year? We were trying to book the standard 353 days ahead and despite lack of status can usually get tickets well ahead (at least in Y). In the end we were able to get flights on Cathay all the way to Tokyo via HKG, but are curious whether something odd has happened and aren't sure how to book in the future. When we called QF they said the flights haven't been released, but it is less than 11 months away.

You might be able to get the CX ones if you're lucky. I snared the last tix to HKG on Qf for 4/1/16 so it was definitely there but went probably the day it was released.

Why would any airline release award seats when they think the same seat could be sold for cash? Gone are the days of standard 364 day release of award seats. These days airlines open award seats to fill distressed inventory or seats they dont think will be sold for cash. Most good airlines (Qantas don't... Unsure why) stage award seat releases at 6, 3, 1 months then each week prior to the flight depending on a large number of factors/data (eg: time of year, events in the city pairs, actual and projected loads, what the sales team has in the pipeline and so on)

In saying that - CX do staged releases at set times so it can be easier to pickup one of them if you get the timing right.

I've got a mate trying to do the exact same thing on both QF and CX, no luck at all. Amazed especially at CX, four flights a day and no award availability!

Thank Goodness for OW:!: CX award seats are awash via QFF - I had no problems getting 4 x J BNE-HKG-FCO ... 4 x J CDG-HKG-BNE (with 2 x F CDG-HKG) .. Out Dec 15, Back Jan 16.

All my rewards flights have been with CX, never seem to have any QF if 1 month or 11 months out

No hard evidence for this, but it seems to me that since First has been removed from the SYD-HKG route that QF is releasing less award seats on the route (BNE-HKG much easier).
Granted it is high season at the moment being Chinese New Year and all, but loads look like Y is generally oversold and so J is kept for upgrades closer to the time.

I have been struggling with available business class seats SYD-HKG and vv for a while now. I am unable to book 353 days in advance.

Luckily I have been using the Platinum benefit of request award seat to be released but paying a fee for the privilege.
