have a couple of post of interest to me that i'd like some feed back on.

made a booking at hilton at the last minute, was 4hrs before arrival
looked online to make a booking, only wanted the cheapest basic room as we were expecting to arive after 9pm, so only need to sleep not enjoy.
no availability online, checked a couple of sites after hilton direct site, still nothing
thought about going to an ihg property but they were too far as far as we were concerned.
so i rang the hotel direct, as i sometimes do because they do offer better prices then online, anyway,
ask for the 'cheap' basic room and was given the ok, so i was a little shocked.
then went on to my profile, because the partner wanted a cheap upgrade to bigger and better (im using my wifes profile to post, i know her password, cant remember mine and couldn't be bothered to have a new one sent). no upgrades available, was a bit disappointed, and worried just a tad, so arrived at the hotel, we have stayed there in the past and i am currently gold, ask at the desk for an upgrade, and the reply was, you are already upgraded to the highest possible room.

my take on this was:
im gold
past stays (about one to two times a year for past 5 years)
no cheap rooms available
'may as well fill all the rooms' mentality

my question, has extermely similiar situations happened too you; couldnt upgrade because you were already upgraded
what is your opionions on this situation, was way back in September

You booked a room at a hotel that was already heavily booked at 5pm, arrived at 9pm and there were no upgrades available?
I'm actually not at all surprised at this and even as a Diamond I wouldn't expect to get an upgrade in these circumstances.
In general HH Upgrades are processed by the hotel manually during the morning of arrival date. It is likely that the room you got was one of the only rooms available.

And to answer your question, yes I've had numerous occasions where the hotel has advised me that I can't be upgraded as no upgrades were available beyond the room category I had been allocated.

I read this as the OP had been upgraded to the highest possible room (i.e. a suite) , and was wondering if others had also been this fortunate with last minute bookings

I agree with PF on this and really don't understand your problem. The hotel was obviously heavily booked and it seems you were lucky to get any room.

We stay at HSW quite a lot and most times get good upgrades. One recent stay we booked and received a Queen Family Room which was adequate but an upgrade would have made life much easier as our grown up daughter was also staying.

Someone high in the hotel management team tried to sort an upgrade for us and was unable to do so as the hotel was full.

ie
1. I booked weeks out,
2. We are known at the hotel
3. I am HH Diamond
4. They tried to help as all the higher rooms had been sold.

We got what we paid for so HSW did all that was required of them.

I'm reading it like Aussie-Flyer. Some clarification needed.

Never had that though, last last-minute booking I tried the hotel was chockers and I got free valet parking instead of an upgrade.

If I'm reading it wrong, you really couldn't expect an upgrade in those circumstances.

If reading it right, then I presume they figure it's better to sell a room at any price than to have if empty for the night.

I'm not sure how to read it. Perhaps a few more wines may help. To the OP, try to explain your concern as I don't see one. You booked late wanting only a basic room as you were only there for a sleep. Your missus wants a better room (contradictory). They can't give you more as you've already been upgraded in a heavily booked hotel. I fail to see an issue....either with what you are talking about, or what the hotel has done incorrectly.......or are you just saying you and your wife are ecstatic over the service offered? I'm confused.

That sums it up nicely ;)
I'm also intrigued at the thought of booking a room at 5pm on the day of check-in and expecting anything other than a lucky dip but that might just be my OCD kicking in :D

I seriously think the OP was a happy post and not a complaint. I believe they have been upgraded

It is confusing but I think the OP paid a cheap rate and was expecting a basic room so asked if an upgrade was possible. The hotel said no as their 'cheap room' was actually higher than a basic room as the hotel wanted to just fill the room. Now my head hurts.

I guess if you wanted cheap then a hostel would suffice ?

I guess I was getting to the following

yay for the unexpected upgrade

but, if I was blue HH or no HH or have never stayed at that particular hotel in the past would
a) I have gotten that room at basic room rate still (since no basic room was available online on any site for this particular property)
or would I have been told , sorry no room X available, however room Y is available for $$$$ or room z available for $$%$ and if you don't want those rooms tough luck

did it help that it was also such a late booking and calling the hotel direct?

and what if I had just rocked up in the lobby and asked for a basic room, would I have been told the same as above with regards to rooms x, y & z or would I have been welcomed with open arms with a z room at an x price?

I think that I'll keep out of this. Sorry.

OK thanks for the clarification. Generally I think we all say the same at an upgrade. As for the rest of your questions.......it depends on the day. Back in my day of Blue, I scored a relaxation room with a third party stealer of a deal as I wanted to extend the booking by a day and that was the only room they could do it with. I think the old saying "Never look a gift horse in the mouth" rings true lots of times with accommodation deals...not just Hilton.

I once booked a suite with club access at Sofitel Sydney (QF strike day) 1 hours prior to arrival, online. It was selling cheaper than a base room so I think I lucked into a sale fare. Got 2 nights there and TI or QF paid for it too.

Beautiful room and some good meals to boot.
