On my next trip I hope to be HLO only. I'd like to do a trial packing to see if I can keep within (or close to) 7 kg for SQ. I'd like to find a very light-weight luggage scale that I can take with me and use as I add or discard items during the trip. I've read reviews of the Travlon Micro; some say it's excellent, but a few others posting on Amazon gave it a very low rating, one even saying it got stuck after the first use, others that is was too inaccurate to be trustworthy. Any experience here with this or other brands distributed in Australia? [I don't have bathroom scales.]

Sorry, Limewood, don't want to create Gumtree account. Can you tell me what brand it is?

Thanks DC3. I hadn't seen that, but at 185g it's a bit hefty to carry with one, compared with the Travelon at 71g. And relatively pricey too, esp. as shipping is in addition. Balanzza make a mini one too, but again the reviews are very mixed, and the batteries are a hard-to find and expensive type. But I hadn't thought about the hook that both the Travlon and the Samsonite have as being something that could be regarded as dangerous in hand luggage.

Kevrosmith: that's the page I've been looking at - and they have 10% off the already reduced prices today, hence my sudden flurry of interest. How long have you been using the Travelon? Any problems with it? Has the hook been queried in your hand luggage?

I find pretty much every hotel has scales, unless you are trying to weight it at the get go in which case you could leave it at home. ;)

The travelon has been great. Been using about 3 years. Never had it queried in my hand luggage. Only problem I had was I lost my set once, so had to buy another .

I bought based entirely on weight and size. If the GO ones were available when I bought a couple years ago, I probably would've gone for them.

I've decided to go with kevrosmith's recommendation and ordered the GO 2008, with 10% off.

I think that's the Samsonite one that I avoided because the batteries are expensive and not so readily available. But it does have a longer guarantee than the others.
Somewhere in my reading up on this topic, I saw a report (can't recall where) of a woman who challenged the check-in scales reading of her bag's weight, because it differed so much from her own mini-scale. And it was revealed that an extra weight had been taped onto the back of the check-in scales! Somewhere in South America, I think.
