Staff Travel to and from BNE Airport

I'm looking at moving to Brisbane in the new year, and hence looking around at job possibilities (think a dude having completed tertiary studies, taking a sabbatical before any further study, no major career plans and wanting to move closer to his girlfriend...)

It seems there are vacancies available, or at least applications open, for Virgin groundstaff at BNE. Seems like something I'd be interested in jumping into, given my love of travel and aviation and airports etc It'll put bread on the table and I can cheer up annoying passengers, so a win-win for all :mrgreen:

However, I won't have a car immediately upon moving. If I ended up getting a job at the airport, are there any staff discounts for the $30-return trip on the AirTrain? There is a bus link to DFO shopping center, and onwards to Toombul Shopping Center and trains from there, but if living more on the South side of the city, which looks likely, it could be a bit long-winded, to say the least, to travel on so many trains and buses early in the morning just to get to work. And it'd be shift work, so late night knock-offs and no DFO buses from then on.

Should I scrap the idea for another time? What other options are out there for staff travelling to and from the airport, employed either with a domestic airline (Virgin, say), or in the lounge (under Accor) or in selling boomerangs and cork hats to tourists?

AirTrain do have special tickets for airline staff and airport workers (see http://www.airtrain.com.au/workersweekly) at much better rates than what they offer the general plebs - sorry 'General Public'.

Some Virgin staff are entitled to free Airtrain travel.

I know one of the T-Bus drivers and from memory he said airport staff get cheaper travel on airtrain ($5?) but not free. I'll ask him again if I see him today.

Apparently airport staff are able to purchase 20 airtrain tickets for $100. That gives you travel as far as South Brisbane.

You really need a vehicle if you're a shift worker at BNE Airport. If you've got an 0400 start there aren't any trains running at that hour to get you to work on time.

I'd apply anyway & see how you go. Do you know what suburb you would be living in? A stack of airport workers live at Northlakes but traffic can be a real PITA sometimes going home in the arvo. If you live Southside you get a pretty good run over the Gateway Bridge but the toll is about $4.50 each way which adds up.

It seems to be desirable although not mandatory when working for Aeroscare to be able to hoon around the staff carpark in a Nissan Skyline but such enthusiasm shouldn't be repeated particularly when doing pushbacks on 737 aircraft.
