The morning papers are reporting that QF has secured slots at Haneda starting in August.

Seems that NRT will also remain, but serviced from a "secondary city" - likely BNE or MEL.

Operating aircraft not revealed yet. Does the A333 have the range? With the refurbed J seat it could be quite competitive.

I must say I wasn't expecting this.

A route like bne-hnd is shorter than mel-hkg which cx and qf operate a333 on already
 
Good news for QF. Whenever I've been on QF22 there has always been a solid load, even on a 747.

Will be interesting to see what Australian city is used - BNE or MEL. Considering MEL now has JQ MEL-NRT, perhaps BNE-NRT on QF is more likely?

I assume that QF will be likely to use JLs ground services and lounges etc. at HND

The A333s definitely have the range to do MEL/BNE-HND.

MEL-NRT is looking less likely given that JQ is already operating on the route. Just saw some old press release back in 2002 annoucing the commencement of the MEL-NRT route (using 763s as there were no A330s back then). The route was dropped in 2008.
 
Good news! The location of HND is better.
The one thing I do love about NRT is the JL F lounge. How is the new JL F lounge in HND?

Could QF theoretically operate the SYD-NRT route using an A333 instead of the B744? I suppose they deploy the B744 due to the big demand for seats on this route?

SYD will likely go to HND to maximise the premium traffic, the NRT slots will be either BNE or MEL

Would be interesting to see JQ pushed off MEL-NRT replaced by QF for a change in addition to QF BNE-NRT flights!

I think SYD-NRT will remain, possible to be changed to a day flight.
Looks like it will be BNE-HND because MEL already has the JQ service.
 
I think itll be BNE-HND mainly because MEL already has a JQ NRT service.

I also think once the A330 refurbs are done that ALL Asian QF routes will operated by A330s. QF are trying to grow services to the Americas and with no new aircraft on the way and attempting to retire 747s at the same time, they wont have the 747 frames to spare for Asian routes.

This will also provide a consistency in the product - you'll know exactly what you'll get to Asia and CX have shown the A330 is the perfect aircraft for Australia to Asia routes.
 
Suspect also that given QFi still has a few 747s to be retired, and more 330s back from JQ, that potentially both will be A330 services.

Syd-Tokyo goes down slightly, but forcing connecting traffic through MEL/BNE (poor WP/P1s if BNE) probably means about the same or more seats for the direct flyers.

The new Int HND lounge looks awesome.
Have only ever been to the Dom HND lounge which is very basic by comparison, but does have beer pouring machines
 
More interested in the return service.Will it spend the day at HND or a daylight flight hopefully back to BNE.That would suit me fine.

I wouldn't be surprised to see any new BNE lounge becoming similar to the QF lounges in SIN/HKG, with perhaps some limited WP/WP1 benefits.

Gold coast has direct flights to NRT via JQ on the dreamliner

So maybe even
Changing the JQ leg to BNE-NRT
and introducing MEL-HND QF?
 
There was talks JL was looking to move SYD-NRT to HND and opening a 2nd Australian destination, again either MEL or BNE so maybe QF operating HND services elsewhere might make sense as both JL and QF would provide both options of HND and NRT. In the case of MEL & BNE lets have a look:

- BNE: People love to bunch BNE with the whole of SE Queensland (for larger population pool), and since we are looking at SE Queensland as a whole, JQ currently already offers daily OOL-NRT services, I think this caters well for leisure (and some business) passengers. Why doesn't JQ operate the services out of BNE? Is it because the market is generally low yielding and better suited for OOL? What is the case that BNE needs a direct link to Tokyo? What businesses are there? Whats the Premium load breakdown? I believe the Japanese traffic in recent years have seen a major shift towards Cairns with SE Queensland being more attractive to Mainland Chinese visitors, so that might see a shift in demand.

- MEL: Jetstar currently offers MEL-NRT x4 weekly, it seems the flights are doing rather well and pushing up Japanese arrivals into Melbourne, with last month alone, bumping Japanese arrivals up 80%. My guess is, QF maybe getting a feel for the demand of MEL-NRT and is probably testing the market with the less riskier JQ flights first before committing to its own mainline services, we could see JQ bump off and QF step in. However the current JQ schedule links up well with GK and optimises connections at both ends (besides the awful midnight arrival into MEL!) in MEL (outbound) and NRT. Or QF could supplement with an extra x3 weekly services to make MEL daily.

Either way, I think both JL & QF are about to announce something big, both will announce new routes launches and schedule changes.
