Hi all,

Next year I have a trip booked to fly ADL>MEL>SYD>SCL (Insert side trip here) SCL>SYD>ADL for $1550

I booked on the double points offer, (however now realised I should've waited until the 10pt/$ gift cards came out!)

I booked deliberately on the QF operated service, rather than the codeshare with LA.

Looking at the points calculator, for a NB like me, flying in discount economy, I would have been better off taking the LA Codeshare, for 7063 (1 pt per mi) x2 = 14126 than the QF flight 3750 x2 = 7500

I know that they reduced the rates to make it "fairer", but c'mon, shouldn't you expect more points on the QF service!

Booking on the QF codeshare LA metal... still earns at QF rates. You'd have been better off looking with LA directly on the LA code...

Simpler and fairer my a*se!

Mate/Miss SCs are what you need to look at not points these days to climb the ladder.
LA SC earn on QFF are lousy now post Jul 14 changes.
FF points does not get you go QF PS or Qf SG.

Can you point out where in the OP's post s/he has booked this routing in order to chase status? It appears to me from the post, indeed the thread title, that earning points was more important to the OP than SCs.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

That is an interesting anomaly.

Can you cancel and rebook the flight on the LA code on the Qantas website using a gift voucher purchased and earning 10 x QFF points.

Assuming cancellation fee of ~$300 would the ~30,000 QFF points be worth that much?

I will wait for the OP to add which he/she places more importance, earning the QFF points or the QFF SCs.
Will have put a rubber muzzle on my snout as of now...

Hi,
I have given a couple of moments thought to cancelling and re booking with the 10pt/$ but I'm a bit unsure of if I think it is worth it at this stage. As far as booking early is concerned, I knew that the gift cards would be coming, but i didnt think they would overlap with the special (end date 19/nov, double points ended 13/oct).

The points are probably the bigger draw card for me. With my 250 lifetime status credits, I don't think I'm going to be getting enough in the year to get me to PS or SG.

Ok so let me get this straight though.... if I book a QF flight on LAN metal, I have the QF point earn rate?

This would mean that the QF double points promo simply brought their points earn rates up to where the LAN points earn rate was. (as LAN did not have the double points deal, only the cheaper flights)

As for status credits... You get more status credits for doing flights around South America on LAN that you do by getting there. (eg SCL > BOG earns 2500 pts and 25 SC but you would only get 20sc for flying LAN into SCL?)

The pricing for flights around that continent is so confusing.... one way $800 and return for $700 ... and in some cases Premium econ or even business (combined in a multi city booking) is cheaper for the flights.
The LAN booking engine leaves a lot to be desired...

Does anyone know if there is a way to use gift cards to book my flights around South America?

A QF flight number earns under the Qantas points earn rate.

Qantas gift vouchers? Not unless the flights are part of a Qantas itinerary ex-Australia.
