Sorry - just saw i posted this in the wrong place and don't know how to delete it!

Hi there,

Im flying on Qantas Airbus A380 London Heathrow - Melbourne and then back, Sydney - London Heathrow.

On the way out I have the option of 48B&C, 66A&B or 35D&E on upper deck. Which should i choose?

The upper deck sounds good as it might be quieter/calmer, but lots of people saying that row 35 gets problems with foot traffic and you have no where to put anything. I've heard some people have said 66A is good but is it better to be in the upper deck?

Is turbulence much different on the upper deck at the back - I usually try and fly near the wing.

Also, I was wondering if all/any of these seats have power - different websites say different things….

Sorry for all the questions and thanks very much.

Hi yellow,

Welcome to AFF. I think your question is fine for the "your questions" thread, however there is already a thread about the best economy seats on the Qantas A380: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....er-program/best-seats-economy-a380-31965.html

For the record, I would be choosing seats 35 D&E out of the options you have mentioned. I find the upper deck economy cabin to have a nice private feel and those seats have plenty of leg room.

I have sat in both rows 48 and 66 and liked row 66 best.
But if I could have chosen upper deck row 35 I would have.
As Mattg said a much nicer smaller cabin.

Thank you very much,

Looks like 35 upper deck sounds best.
I'm just nervous now about extra turbulence being at the very back of the plane on the upper deck…. (i know turbulence won't hurt the plane or anything - just hate the feeling). I usually try to book on the wing because i've always heard it's less bumpy. I'm afraid i've worked myself up reading a few things saying you feel every bump, major fishtailing etc… on the upper deck at the back of the A380.
Does anyone have any experience on this that might help me choose?

I found it a little bumpy at the back on LAX-MEL, but experienced the same level of bumpy in row 1 of VAs 777....

If I recall correctly AFF's resident pilot jb747 comparing plane to a see-saw at the playground, where the ends will always be more bumpier than that over the direct centre of the plane. Being seated or laying flat at the front however would be much nicer than anything at the back, especially on the A380 ;)

I've sat in 86H which is the the last row of the A380 LAX/SYD and I didn't find it overly bumpy but we had a relatively smooth flight. What is reassuring is when you do get a few bumps have a look at the view from the camera on the tail and the plane doesn't even flinch. Given the choice I would always go upstairs where I could so I'd take 35DE.

yes, I read the sea-saw analogy, but just wandering from frequent flyers how much you can feel the difference - its hard though - of course you can't be in 2 places on the plane at once!

If i go for 35D/E, I know everything will have to be stored for take off/landing, but once in the air can i have my bag in front of me - or a handbag under the seat in front, or is it a no no because of being an exit row?

I would be choosing the seat that is most comfortable first (rather than worrying about the location on the plane) eg exit row, bulkhead, special seat that somehow has more space like 71D. If two seats are equally comfortable, then I would try to choose one up front as possible (like to get off faster than waiting around for everyone else). That said I am not a fan of turbulence and sitting upright makes it worse for me, regardless of which part of the plane. If flying business or first, at least I can lie flat and "pretend" to sleep through it.

I’ve chosen 35C/D, exit row upper deck over 66A/B exit row lower deck.

The general consensus seems to be that the upper deck benefits (quieter, smaller, getting on and off quicker with its separate entrance, quicker service etc...) outweigh the downsides - the legroom is so much it can be used as a walkway, the general lack of storage on the upper deck, its proximity to the toilet, and the possibility of feeling more turbulence at the back.

It seems that its such a small cabin the toilet is generally not an issue and people tend to use the ones in PE in front (this surprised me).
My husband is 6ft2 so hopefully with us both stretching out with white socks on this will help the walkway situation. It would be great if we can put our feet up on a bag during the flight, one person said he did this in another thread, but i don’t know if we’d get away with it as it is an exit row - maybe it just depends on the crew you get?
We will try and get on early to get some storage and i’ll just have to put up with the turbulence - hopefully it will be smooth sailing!

One person suggested 66A/B exit row over 35C/D but it seemed mainly because of the storage issue, and i can’t find anything that says 66A/B definitely has power and thats quite important to me. It does look like one of the best exit row choices downstairs. All of 71D, 80A etc.. have been taken. It is over the wing, so better for turbulence, but i’ve herd it can become a bit of a congregating area for people stretching, chatting etc... and it does look near a big block of loos - although no ones mentioned it, and it seems like the downstairs cabin is noisier/less comfy in general.

Its a difficult choice for me. Last time i took more than a 9 hour flight (London - Tokyo) it was with JAL in 1st so no such dilemma!!

Thank you all very much for your help and wealth of knowledge.

I’ll keep an eye out for any other seats that open up on the upper deck - is this at all likely?

If anyone has had experience in row 35DEF i’d love to know if you could keep your bag out during the flight?
