hi team,

i need to get to KUL next July (3 pax). could i use alaskan to get there? the award chart for Cathay has between HKG & AUS on it for 30k one way, and then intra asia for 22,500 each way - so it would seem like a cheap redemption to HKG, but perhaps a cash fare might be better value for the HKG-KUL leg. (Australia - South Pacific Awards - Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan)

alternatively, i can see there's an emirates flight between melbourne & KL direct- could i use the points for this redemption?

present promo of 56k points for USD1100

also, likelihood of 3 J seats being available?

cheers

Just got back from my RTW trip, a big thanks to the guys on here!!

Flew CX J and F for the same price it was going to cost me in Economy one way to the USA.

Amazing airlines!!

Will defintley be buying some miles when they are on special again for a Hong Kong Trip!

You can only fly Emirates departing America and can only come back as far as Dubai or Hong Kong.

You can do Mel - Hkg all on CX J but it will be 60,000 points return. I think to do I rta asia would be another 45,000 points return hkg - kul

Also, leaving Aus on CX they usually only release 2 J seats but you have up until 60 days prior to your travel date to make changes free of charge. You could always try book into T class (prem Econ) and then keep an eye out to see if they release another award seat.

Out of Hong Kong they have 5 x J seats to the USA but I can't tell you what they have to their other destinations.

Also alaska can do multiple class bookings as well. I find using JAL's site for availability is very accurate and up to date almost instantaneously as well.

I know you asked here for 'informed' advice, but on my and others experience you can call Alaskan and they are very helpful and easy to talk to. For CX you have to book by phone anyway (but I'm not saying you inquire and book on the same call).

Obviously much more practical / cheap if you can call by Skype or similar.

It was 80k PER-HKG-LAX (J/F respectively) plus $130 in taxes. Didn't fly the return leg.

Just a quick follow up on the connecting flight issue with CX... if I need to fly to say China or Japan - have we confirmed this is going to be two awards? That is, AU-HKG and then HKG-China or Japan?

Has anyone had issues buying miles in the last few days? I'm getting my parents-in-law onto Alaskan in order to get them over to the US with Cathay next year. I've found all the flights etc and did the following transactions last night with their accounts (opened for several weeks):

Father in law: 40k+16k bonus
- 40k + 16k bonus
- 7k+1400 bonus
For total 120400 miles (all with one credit card)

Same again for mother in law using a different credit card, and all transactions in that order.

I received confirmation screens with confirmation numbers for all transactions. But then I only received an email confirmation for the THIRD transaction done, the 7000+1400 transaction.

So now my FIL has 8400 miles and MIL has 0. And the bonus period ends tomorrow!

Has anyone got any suggestions about how I can resolve this? I've told them to call Citibank (their CC provider) to check the transactions aren't getting held up at that end.

Many thanks for any help. Just want to get their points into the account and the flights locked in.

I managed to resolve all the above issues with buying miles for my parents in law and subsequently locking in the flights. Turns out that Citibank blocked all but one transaction. They both talked to Citibank the following day and had them unblocked, but it still took more than 24 hours for points.com to process the transactions. After they showed up I used Skype to call Alaska once again to book the following two one-way awards:

- PER-HKG(stop)-JFK in June 2015
- YYZ-HKG(stop)-PER in August 2015

All in J for 60k pp/per trip with Cathay Pacific. Total outlay including fees and taxes was $3450 per person. Much better than the $8700 cost of paying for the fare with CX directly.

Does anybody have any experience or know if it's possible booking Australia to North Asia with QF (e.g. PER-SYD-NRT) and not CX, as I can't seem to find a table for Qantas for Asia..

if there's no table then it's not possible.

Use AA for that award

Is it possible to book CX awards that are not going to the US or Canada ?

I know you can do like Mel-hkg-JFK/lax etc but how about like Mel-hkg-fra/lhr etc ?

Cheers

will have to be paid as two awards, aus-hk and hk-europe.

Every time I get a notice of a new post I'm hoping for another promotion. Need some more miles NOW. Planning Europe for my mum via HKG.

Only available option Australia - NE Asia is per the tables. For that route one award PER-SYD on QF; then SYD-NRT on CX

AA only from/to Nth America.

i mean aadvantage, thats the best way to obtain that award

with AS you need to book 3 diff awards, QF domestic, CX australia-HK, and CX HK-asia... not sensible

OK; agree with that; but if Ogs70 has AS miles, then the answer to his question is no - you can't do that route on CX only.
