Hi all,

I am travelling to HKG next year with my wife though because we couldn't initially find two seats on the same flight departing from the same city ex-Oz on CX J, in true AFF true lol we have booked separate flights. For her, the 8:40am departure from MEL, booked through QF, and for myself, a 7:30am MEL-SYD followed by an 11:00am departure for my flight to HKG. This worked reasonably well as we could arrive together at around 6:30am into MEL.

However now on the same day of departure another two CX J seats on the 8:40am flight from MEL have opened. So if I would like to change my MEL-SYD-HKG flight to just MEL-HKG on the same day will I incur any fees ? Is it possible that I would even get a refund on the fees because of a reduction in total taxes and surcharges due to removal of the domestic J component on QF ? Or will this likely be offset by paying another US$35 in phone booking fees ?

Also, in the process of changing my flight over, is there a chance that someone can grab the seat that I want before I do and I end up with nothing ? Or is there a way to put the seat on "hold" the way you can when buying the ticket initially ? Can the AA agents do the whole thing for me over the phone or do the miles get reinstated into my account first which typically takes several days ?

Thanks, appreciate any advice on this matter. I've cancelled an AA award before but never changed one. Cheers.

As long as you don't change origin, destination or downgrade cabin, such changes should be FOC - not sure about close in Woodford booking fees though.

The agents can do it over the phone.
There is a $150 US change fee to re-ticket. Won't be possible to waive this but may be a small offset if the taxes are less on the new award

Can SYD-HKG be changed to MEL-HKG FOC ? Won't it require re-ticketing ?

EDIT: my bad, won't incur a fee as per what you have stated

Do you mean origin and destination of the individual flights or of the whole flight itinerary ? If the latter no then there won't be any changes.
I thought the US$150 fee was just to have miles reinstated after cancelling an award ?
And what does Woodford mean ?
Travel is for April 2015.

It's the latter. $150 fee if Origin/ Destination/ Carrier changes (not applicable if changes are within same Award eg EY to QF fee charged, QF to CX no fee as both One World).
Don't know about Woodford but Awards changed/ re-booked within 20 days of travel incur a fee so not applicable to you.
