I think it's outrageous and a rort when you get quoted MEL-SYD in J and then SYD-LAX in Y when redeeming a classic award but paying the J award fare for the whole trip!!

This seems to have been fixed in that the points reflect the actual class of travel now as per post number 13 of this thread

You don't pay for an F fare when it is mixed class. I can't find the example you cited but a J! MEL-SYD-LHR with MEL-SYD in J and SYD-LHR in Y prices at 80,000 points which is 16,000 + 64,000 so SYD-LHR is priced at the economy rate.

I have checked a few others and all come out at the right amount based on travel classes :)

Surely it has to be a mistake? I've seen mixed classes on a many a trip of course but never seen a case where the class designated is incorrect for the whole trip. I look forward to the day when Qantas advertise a Y or J fare then tell you it will be in F. lol It is like offering to sell you a $20 million house overlooking Sydney Harbour then, in the fine print, telling you it is actually in Penrith. Bait and switch.

And here is another one which is supposed to be F Flexi on the 30 October MEL-LHR. Perhaps that's why its called Flexi as you may seated in any cabin other than F LOL. Simpler and Fairer :)

First Leg in J second Leg in J and final leg in Y

Is this a case of 'Simpler and Fairer"? It's simpler for QF to provide a Y cabin and fairer for the staff who want to fly F without any pesky clients???? :D Just joking of course; I don't believe this this is the case at all. It's just a massive case of 'let the buyer beware' before they book their flights.

Would it be better marketing if they sell it as a business class flight with a free upgrade to first on that leg?

If you booked an F ticket and got put in Y or J the whole way, would you at least have access to the F Lounge?

This has been an issue for a long time ... I fly from Melbourne to Singapore regularly. Whenever I try to book an award fare I invariably get the dreaded !. Business class to Singapore is NOT business from MEL to SYD and Y from SYD to SIN. This is misleading, deceptive and unconscionable.

Not unless you have the qualifying FF status - the ticket stock would be marked Y or J.

Unfortunately this practice is widespread in the industry. I agree it is appalling.

Software/search engines are not rocket science. Yes they are complex, but there is no excuse for them not operating essentially flawlessly.

If I do a search for J fares, I would expect a HUGE and CLEAR warning if a fare was going to be displayed that is not J.

Wouldn't it be simpler to not show the non-existent J fares??? Or a I being too literal in thinking that is the result we'd like from a website search?? ;)
