Is this something they do?

What I really want to know is: if expertflyer lists Y7, will there be 7 empty seats?
Travelling with an infant tomorrow and would really like a shadow! Have picked row 8.

Yes, but note this is QF who list up to 9.

What this means is they are prepared to sell up to 7 Y seats only; there is likely less than that actually unsold for the flight. (I.e. Expect a pretty full cabin.)

And depending on the sector, you have the issue of flex ticket holders. If you are flying on one of the 'bus routes' like MEL-SYD you will have people who had booked that service who miss it and others who arrive at the airport early and get on board so until moments before boarding you will have no idea of the final line up.

And then again they could cancel a flight and accommodate them on yours. The shadow is one of life's little mysteries. Do you want the shadow to seat the infant after take off?

Every airline does it - and any airline not overbooking Y cabin is just throwing money away.

Well for the record, last I saw was Y7 and there was one empty seat - luckily (or thanks the lounge angels I suspect) I got it =)

Funny didn't think Qantas oversold domestic flights, international yes but never heard of it being the case on domestic.

It was once put to me that they do oversell domestic economy, but not the aircraft as a whole. Or - where do you think school holiday op-ups come from? :)
