Just a simple question about becoming a silver member with Qantas.
My anniversary is the 28 of February. As I mainly fly from Perth to Sydney only, I never collect enough SC to upgrade. This year I will fly from Perth to Detroit and that plus all the domestic flight i will clock about 480 SC. Biggest problem is that the flight to US will happen the end of Jan or beginning of Feb.
My question is, if i qualify to upgrade to Silver in Jan 2015, will i revert back to Bronze on my anniversary (barely a month) OR i become a Silver member AT my anniversary?
I hope i make sense, I read all the PDS and googled everywhere i can think of but I just confused myself more.

You become silver as soon as you hit 300SCs. You keep silver to the end of your membership and the following 12 months.

Thank you Mr Orange, every year i get only 260 or 280 SC. It's a relief to read your reply :)
Oh and thanks for the prompt answer.

The hard part is attaining, and then you get the surprise of your life. Retaining PS/SG gets easier.
You will have more than 12 months to retain PS/SG!
My year starts in Aug. From Aug 14, I have been collecting a lot, flew some J on dom and a J from ADL to SYD to CHC to SYD to ADL, flew some discYs too.
I am now sitting at 500, ready for SG.
But I note that for me to retain PS, I have got from Aug 14 to Jul 16, so more than 12 months to retain PS.
You will understand once you see it in your own account.
In a way, even though QF fares are more $$$ than VA fares, on dom Au flights, QF is better.
O, forgot to say, OP, watch for 500 QF SCs, thats your Loyalty Bonus, when you hit 500 QF SCs, you automatically get 8000 QF FF points from QF into your account.
As you have flown many QFd flights, more than 4 eh, so you will get the LB, which VA does not have.
Depending on when you booked the US flights, would dictate how many SCs you will obtain, if booked pre Apr 14, you will earn the most. After Apr 14, on the cheaper fares, QF FF and QF SC earn rates drop a bit, more so for dom Au fares.

I never collect enough SC to upgrade.
The correct word is attain or retain.
QF does not use SC to upgrade, but they use QF FF points to upgrade.
Pedantic I do realise.

Thanks Poochie, very good points there. The US flight is on premium economy and will be sorted this week. I make 6 or 8 flight PER/SYD and I never bothered really to understand the different classes in economy. The company organize it and if they can make me fly on the cheap they do (and i can't blame them) but mainly i have flexy fares so i can change flight if i have to. If the US trip goes well I may have to go again maybe 2 or 3 times per year. Right now, if no other jobs are thrown at me i will have 480 SC after the US trip. Bummer, I may go and see my son in SYD at Christmas and hit the 500 SC.

Guys, this is my first post here. Thank you for all the advice given.

Fair enough, I say collect because in reality.... I fly, fix what I have to fix and fly back. Never cost me a single cent. :p
Let me rephrase it:
I never attain enough SC during the year but when i become a PS i should be able to retain it.

Yes, retaining PS is easy.
250 SCs and thats it.
VA, for which I am PS too, is a lower standing, lower standard in my point of view.
They view themselves now as a full service airline, cheaper, granted cheaper than QF, but not as good.
Ok, thats now down pat.
All you need to do now is watch your QF FF balance and QF SC rise.
Addition blah:
Some more twaddle:
a).Because nowadays, PS do not get access to the premium check in desk, (granted you can do OLCI-but still have to present your passport to the QF check in person to have the MRZ read), even with OLCI, you will still need to have to present yourself to QF check in PERd. Even though you don't really get to int till SYDd and then SYDi.
b).If you can afford it, get yourself a membership on here, AFF Corporate Membership, cheaper to join care of here, than doing an individual membership. QF QP members at Australian airports can use the premium check in counters, ie, shorter queues, and you will get to taste the PER QPd, then after transferring from SYDd to SYDi, taste the SYD QPi.
c).Also have QF QP access to lounges in the US. Or access to associate lounges of QP as most likely, QF QP does not have a lounge in Detroit.
The good thing about QFs Australian domestic fare, even after the Jul 14 changes, you/I/we still get to earn QF FF and QF SCs even on the cheaper fares.
Some airlines do not allow earning any "miles" on cheaper discY fares.
Sorry Markis, I am trying.

Not sure I am following you on this. What is AFF membership for?

First step, pay AFF $50 annually for AFF gold membership (bear with me).
With AFF gold membership, this gives you access to buy what we on here call QP (meaning the QF (Qantas Club) annual membership at a discount.
Thats what you see up the escalators in PERd, where a lot of people go up. Go up to the QP (Qantas Club).
I was sceptical about QP, been a QF member since 1997, and never considered joining.
Then, thought seriously about it.
Then joined, on my own, but this year, come renewal time, I will pay to renew QP (Qantas Club), under AFFs Corporate scheme, saving $.
Getting premium check in is a plus, you travelling in premY might get to use premium counter to check in at PERd, or not, but its a faster experience with the premium counter staff, than that of the general public.
Here is an analogy: I was flying ADL to PER to SIN with QF, when they flew the PER to SIN route.
Had done OLCI, got the BP home printed, got to boarding gate at ADL airport, and the BP would not work. Kept showing red, many times.
Then the check in girl said, to the service desk and scan your passport, what I thought to myself, scan my passport (???)..., turns out that even if you have OLCI, and entered Advanced Passport Info into your booking, you still have to have your passport photo page MRZ entered into QFs system. As my booking was linked, so you do OLCI in PER, print out your BP at home or work (for Detroit trip), but still have to present passport to QF staff at PERd airport.
The queues for the domestic services at PERd/ADLd are very long, can be very long. People with connections overseas going to the US, with trolleys loaded.
If you can afford it, buy QP. This allows you to use the premium check in counter at Aust dom airports.
QPi at SYDi is worth the fee you pay.
If you have transit time of 4 hours, from your PERd flight landing to your US SYDi departure, go for the QP.
To sum it up, join the Qantas Club!

I am a LTS with few perks, I may have missed the removal of this particular perk, when did that happen, and is it enforced at chk in? But, as a QP member, priority chk in is 'reinstated'?

Booth PS and QP benefits do include premium/dedicated check-in and additional checked luggage allowance when traveling on QF in economy. Note that the PS priority check-in is only for international.

You and me alike! I've been fronting up to J counters on all my int'l travels and didn't even realise I wasn't eligible anymore! I've never been shooed away, but maybe they're just being nice? I went back and checked my PS renewal literature and it looks like the wording changed in 2011 stating that PS are to use QP/W counters, but to use J counters if QP/W wasn't available. In 2012, the wording became what it is today (you're no longer allowed to use J counters).

Interestingly, as a OW Ruby when not flying QF, you can use the J counters of the other OW airlines.

Ok I join AFF and after that I join QP as a corporate because of the AFF membership. Well I was told today that I may have to go to US again after this first visit. Looks like I better sort all of it while i got the time. Am I right? AFF first then QP?

Yes.
AFF Gold first, then you save $150 on QP. AFF Gold is $50 a year.
Because you do do many Aust dom QF flights, it's worth it overall.
More than 10 local Aust dom flights a year return is worth to have QP.
Kids now try into QP too, but less than general population.
Just scan QP card snd walk in.
Scanner plings green for me all the time with my QP card.
Nice feeling being part of the elite.
Back to perks of PS, was it the loss of Priority Boarding and NOT PS loss of using premium counter. One of it was a loss of perk. Too old a dog I am to remember the what's and where I saw it though. Apologies.

If the OP has to do more than one (return) trip to the US in the 12 months relevant period, he or she will make SG in no time.
2 US trips in Premium Y, and the domestic trips, 700 SCs will fly by, and able to be collected in no time.
PER to SYD to DFW to DET and back... x 2.
Esp if Flex PremY at 115 one way, x 4 460! OR if in PremY, all up 360... plus Aust dom flights.
AND so PS never had priority boarding, ok, got that.
