Hi all

Hoping somebody knows the answer to this? I want to book some flights to the US before the QF double points offer finishes tomorrow. Still finalising my arrangements while I'm there so don't yet know which city I will be returning to Australia from.

If I book the QF flights now, with the return segment being just LAX-BNE and then book a standard AA or AS flight in a few weeks time (for example, SEA-LAX) giving myself a few hours to connect at LAX, am I then able to link the bookings to protect myself from potential mis-connects? Or do I have to book it all in one go in order to be protected?

Don't know if this changes anything, but I'm QF Gold.

Thanks heaps.

dont blow a deal on a connection time, give yourself 2 hours and links the bookings by ringing QF to let them know you will be on QFXX, they will note in the booking.

Gold helps but no one is immune from people and systems!!

Linking the bookings while being a good thing will not protect you in the event of misconnection.
Just leave yourself plenty of transit time at LAX.

Doesn't AA operate with a non-official "flat tire" policy? (Or, more formally, late arrival domestic standby procedure.) So if the OP links the bookings, (and also manages to get checked in for the AA flights, at the QF checkin counter in BNE) and then misconnects, AA will look after them in LAX.

Mind you, being "looked after" means joining the standby lottery queue, on what can be pretty full AA flights out of LAX!

Yes they do but I'm not too sure how that will help the OP get on a QF flight back to AU

If AA -> LAX -> QF and AA is late then AA will protect - even on separate tickets ...

oneworld - Separate Tickets - American Airlines

AA to/from AA or a oneworld® Carrier

If a customer is holding separate tickets on AA or another oneworld carrier, customers holding separate tickets where travel is on oneworld airlines should be treated as through ticketed passengers. In the event of a disruption on the originating ticket, the carrier responsible for the disruption will be required to reroute the customer to their final destination. The ticket stock of the second ticket must be of a oneworld carrier, eligible under the Endorsement Waiver Agreement. You may contact AA Reservations 1-800-433-7300 (U.S. and Canada) or outside the U.S. and Canada, reference Worldwide Reservations Numbers for additional information if the separate ticket is for travel on a oneworld carrier.

I'm off to South Africa on QF in a few days and have a separate ticket to Cape Town with local BA carrier Comair.

The connection time between the two flights in 105 minutes so if QF is on time, there should be no problem. However, if the QF connection is late, does QF have the same rules as AA when conneting to another OW carrier?

No........

Thanks Princess F. Will keep my fingers crossed the QF flight is on time!!

I know this, I'm just not sure in practical terms how it would work out if the OP is trying to connect to a late night QF flight.

It means AA would be responsible for re-routing the OP to their destination. Most likely on the QF flight the following day.

No........
Actually, the wording on that quote I put up today indicates that there is indeed protection QF-> AA on separate tickets.

Fine except my post you quoted was QF-BA where there is no protection on separate PNR
Maybe there is, but not published so ... the part I quotes isolates oneworld to oneworld of ticketed on oneworld airlines ...

... TBH it's not something I am planning on testing.

I've tested it and it was an absolute failure. Resulted in me paying £200 and claiming it on travel insurance due to a misconnect QF-BA

Given the choice I would opt for an AA flight over AS due to AA being in OneWorld and AS not.

AS will still be able to through check bags onto QF on separate pnrs if the connecting flight departs within 12 hours as long as they have an interline baggage agreement with the connecting airline.

They will also observe the trans Pacific carrier's baggage allowance so won't charge you the USD25.00 per piece baggage fee that would normally be applicable.

In the event that the AS flight was u/s there's still always the possibility they'll wipe their hands of you due to the separate ticket issue so you'd then be referred to QF who might see it as AS's responsibility so you could get the run around. I believe AS have an IATCI agreement with QF so they should be able to issue your QF boarding pass also.

I'd give yourself at least 3 hours at LAX for the connection as being SG you'll have lounge access which will make your transit at LAX more bearable. Depending on what city you're coming from, make sure there's at least a couple of flights after the one you book that would still get you to LAX in time should your a/c breakdown or flight get cancelled for some reason.

Is this the trip where you had HLO but had not been checked in all the way by QF to your final BA destination as separate QF & BA pnrs? If so I believe BA should've uplifted you on a later flight FOC. I'm sure if you'd checked in bags & got both boarding passes you would've been rebooked.

Hindsight of course is always 20/20 however even with HLO I'd give the CSA in Australia the BA on-carriage flight so you can get the BA boarding pass LHR/xx_ and be checked in so if a delay happens downline you're in a better position to be rebooked gratis as should be the case.
