Interesting that the Orkney and Shetland Islands voted emphatically "No". Mustn't trust Edinburgh to look after "their" oil!

They certainly don't if the press is recent days is to be believed. Sad to see the 'Yes' camp resort to attacks against the coalition in Westminster when the were losing the first few councils, until this point it had seemed that they had taken a more bi-partisan approach to their argument, and made it about the future of decision making in their country. Not about the (relative) short term policies of the current Tory/Lib Dem coalition.

Antony Green has called it for 'No'. Looks like only three councils have voted 'Yes' - Glasgow most strongly.

If Antony Green has called it, it's time to put down your glasses. He has the uncanny nack of being right all the time. :)

And so the effect on the Gleneagles rates is .... ? it's the only thing that really is of any concern .... Spot of Falconry or clay target shooting anyone ?? ...... or perhaps some 'Land Rover thrashing' before tea ?

Some of the strongest No votes in Edinburgh, Dumfries, Aberdeenshire and Borders - my roots. Hooray!

The Scottish First Minister must resign, surely?

(But wait for the "yes" claims that 45% "is a vote for change and independence..." )

Yep, that's pretty much what he said. Must have had his concession speech prepared weeks ago and just had to add in the figures :D

Anyway the Taittinger is getting opened tonight, well done Scotland :)

A referendum to make the rest of the UK independent from Scotland now? ;)

Well it is great to see democracy at work. At least Scotland are going to gain more power as a result of this referendum. UK is well again! God Save The Queen!

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Not that it matters with the NO vote winning

...and let it be heard across the Highlands, God Save The Queen....

Not a tight result, but close: 55% opposing, 45% supporting secession.

According to an article on the NY times, there is a map showing the relative voting preferences by region in Scotland. There were two regions around Glasgow which were the only two highlighted to have a majority voting preference towards independence. All of the rest of the regions were either close to even or predominantly opposed independence.

As is always with these, I doubt we will hear the last of this.

I suppose the next major focus might now be the possible secession of Catalonia from Spain, or not. Nearer to home, noises have been made here about combining some of the Swiss cantons.
