Looking at booking a trip to the USA next year using points.
Wanting to book in 2 x Business class awards. Seats are not released yet but I wish to grab them as they are released.
We will then use points for the return flight 6 weeks later.
Is there any disadvantage in booking one way award flights, as we do not want to miss the outgoing award flights.

I don't believe there is any disadvantage in booking one-way award flights.

No discount for booking a return award flight and the only think I can think of is the taxes and surcharges may vary slightly but you can already work that out with a dummy booking now using dummy dates.

Thanks John, yes I have been doing some dummy bookings to see and I can't see any difference. I just was not sure.
I have been looking for a few weeks and the only thing I have noticed is that there does not seem to be any Qantas award flights to New York lately. However there is Cathay, going via Hong Kong

You may have to be flexible and use routes such as FJ via NAN or via BNE/MEL.

Hi, we do this every year to visit the family. Book one way tickets LAX-BNE, then wait a bit until the return dates open and book the second one way tickets. For my flights, which are paid, they originate from the US and that works as well. Sometimes the savings are significant, but during high season the savings are minimal.

Going via DXB is another option. You can easily do the entire journey on EK metal; costs the same amount of points as going across the pacific, and frankly, offers a better product.

I've recently booked J awards PER-LAX and the only availability was via BNE

This is exactly what we do - grab the flights out as soon as we can (when they are released if forward planning) then wait for the return flights for later. Currently doing this for July 2015. Waiting for Emirates to open up August seats as we will pay for those (way cheaper than doing exactly the same flights on Qantas but no status points)

Interesting, who do you book w' for Emirates - not sure if it's a paid or points bkg?

When looking at redemptions, I have not seen anything via Dubai on Emirates.
I have only seen some via London, with Qantas and Ba.

Is Emirates better than Cathay in Business?

We are looking at September next year and it will be near school holidays.

Are your dates over 335 days out? Emirates don't release flights until then.

If not then Q have changed their search engine to exclude Emirates.

I've now travelled in both CX and Emirates J. CX have truly lie flat beds. Emirates the flat angled ones ( well that was our plane). CX have single seats along the aisle and Emirates have 2. Amenities kits for Emirates are gorgeous. CX ok. Catering on Emirates was wonderful. CX was very good. I've a slight preference for Emirates even with our non flat beds.

I've just looked and there are 2xJ Awards SYD-JFK on QF11/15 on August 5 next year ... so QF can get you all the way there on (at least) selected dates.

BD

Emirates haven't released August yet - they are still releasing July dates so that's the problem. I'm waiting for August too.

Thanks BD, I had not looked back to the 5th August 2015. Had been checking closer to the 355 days out.
Yes can't get the direct flight but a change in LA would be ok.

So is Qantas the pick of Oneworld in Business?

Sorry Pushka was posting at the same time. Are Emirates less than 355 days out?

Well thats the gamble then. Take QF or CX early or wait for Emirates.
