thanks grussellt, worked out what I was doing wrong, I was also putting in JFK, La Guardia offers flights
2 questions, is the SYD to DFW direct?
The AA award flight in Economy does not list any baggage allowance.
Can I link the flights if booked at different times and will the baggage allowance be included.

On the return leg I would hope to be able to pick up NYC to SYD via LA.

Checked again today at 10:05 nothing from SYD to NYC via LA. I was at work and had no time to check any other variations.

I am not feeling very confident. As I need flights to be booked in the next three days to get to fit in with our travel plans

Thank you, thank you to everyone who has given me advice and suggestions to secure 2 J flights.

We have success! And I am so excited.
After 2 weeks of stress of logging in and watching the non availability of J awards ( I even rang Qantas to ask about availability and suggestions - they just told me that it is a really busy time of year for award flights to the USA.

I have managed to get 2 J awards Woohoo! Flying SYD to NYC via LA.
Only down side is the leg from LA to NYC is in Premium Economy. Yes I know that it still costs me J points but I was too afraid to try and change destinations knowing how fast the flights have been going over the last couple of weeks - in fact most days even though I tried at 10am there was nothing.
It is still cheaper (points) and quicker than flying the CX route. So I am very happy.
I have chosen my seats can't get anything further forward than row 19, but I will keep a lookout.

Happy :)

In all the queries I have done on Perth - New York in business class, there was not one flight available were the entire trip was in business class. It was always the longest leg that was in economy for some reason. There always seems to be available seats on Cathay Perth - HK - New York which i have booked 3 times in the past 2 years. Is this compensation for the poor international flights out of Perth?
