Rules around expiry of points (family transfers)

We recently flew as a family to LHR, accumulating 12188pts each (4 pax).
I have around 70,000 so have transferred the other 2 x 12188 into my account to make a more usable total.

My family (wife + kids) is unlikely to earn any more QF points in the 12 months from flying.

I know that the transfer does not count as usage, but if I use those points from the account they were transferred (mine) to does that count?

e.g. if I used all my points within 12 months of my family earning them, then this would count as "their" usage? (In any case as all points would be used, they could not be expired in any case...)

Does Qantas take away all points from their account only, or if I didn't use any of the transferred points within 12 months would QF come after the points from my account?

Apologies if this scenario has been covered elsewhere.

Firstly points expire after 18 months of inactivity, not 12 months.

My understanding is that once the points are in your account their "expiry" date will be reset after the first time you earn or use at least one point.
(That is, simply doing a family transfer doesn't reset the expiry date, but any other activity once they have been transferred does).

Yes, transfer to the person who earns most often and there are plenty of ways to keep the points ticking over!

Points expiry is a property of the account not the points. Once the points are transferred to the new account then they expire according to the activity of that new account. Using points to buy an award in your account will count as activity.

It is very easy to keeps accounts active.

Remember you only have to earn 1 point every 18 months to keep the account active.

It's not that simple. The QFF toolbar is a means for Qantas to gather and sell marketing data. Some people do like to protect their privacy.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. The restaurants looks to be a winner, there are places we go to every week in there => an easy 400pts/week for doing next to nothing

Note it may take a month or more for restaurant points to appear in the account. Perhaps also double check that children are eligible to earn restaurant points, being under 18 and all that.

There is no minimum age requirement for who constitutes a diner for the purpose of earning points.

An important point if needing points activity quickly. It's hard to beat woollies with the weekly points transfer.

True. I was more thinking about the case of a child doing the restaurant booking to earn points. I wasn't sure if there might be a law against minors booking licensed premises. Probably not, but just in case.

No one in this thread has touched on the question of frequency of flying and what may or may not be reasonable.

However, I'd suggest that QFF disagree with you as they require activity every 18 months; not to fly with Qantas or, in fact, any other partner airline.

Well given thats not the requirement and you dont actually have to fly it would appear much of this commentary is somewhat moot. Hardly any of my points are from flying and Qantas seems perfectly happy about that.

Eat in any time in June, points credit early August.

Medhead, today I learned that my kids accounts were due to expire as they havent flown QF for 17mths (as they are living overseas). They are kids, we are overseas, and even options like the browser search are not useful as Qantas only gives you notice one month before expiry (and only if you opt in for news)

I am fairly active, so never had to worry about this issue, until today. I tried to trawl through various threads to see what I could do to save the 150000 or so points - my biggest question was whether a transfer to my account would save them. When I saw your post I finally got the confidence that it would. I really value your contributions, even if half the time I disagree with your opinions. Just saying that when you say something you have earned the reputation of at least being correct in the facts (if not the interpretation )

Anyway, I noticed whilst doing the trasfer that Qantas actually does clear this up, in some words of advice they hide in the family transfer process:

¨Points that are transferred to a family member will be subject to the points expiry date that currently applies to the receiving family member's Qantas Frequent Flyer account.¨

I'm not sure if that's a compliment or not.

You could also convince someone in Australia to scan one of your children's EDR cards when doing their shopping once ever 18 months. I usually do a small points earning transaction once a week and would be happy to help, depending on who asks.

The way Qantas search is unreliable in the timing of crediting points. I'd suggest a 4 month lead would be prudent.
