Travelled back to Sydney yesterday on QF 4 from Honolulu with SWMBO in J on the good old 767...the flight was OK, obliviously no fully reclining seats but I knew this when I booked so no surprise there.

The issue yesterday was the state of the IFE system, which on a 767 is based on QF streaming in both J & Y seats.

Over 50% of the iPads were not working, both SWAMBO and I tried 3 different Ipads before we could get one working.

I Spoke with the CSM this and he said it has been a real pain for all staff as the IFE with iPads has been really bad ,he went on to explain the 767 will be taken off the run in 6 months and really thought they were really past their prime ,so the sooner the better.

Apparantly the the CSM on the way up to HNL had left a note to warn him of the issue.

I'll drop a note to QF but really on a 10 hour flight it is a pretty poor offer of IFE in any class.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

United offered less IFE on their 747 flights across the pacific up until recently.

I'm sure you aren't meaning that that makes the poor performance of QF's IFE OK, but what's the significance here?

The OP posed a question, hence I answered it. No way excusing the IFE on the QF767's.

almost as useful as the Q-Streaming on the 717 from CBR to MEL. You could fly everyday for a ear and not get to the end of a movie. The average viewing time seems to be around 7 minutes before you have to turn it off

Once Casa approve gate to gate devices the Q streaming on short flights will become more effective.

Sure it is not cool that half the iPads on QF4 were broken but once the system is opened up to BYOD this will resolve for all pax as those that don't have a device will be in the minority.

Since the first day those iPads were introduced there were many problems with them.
It's not a big deal if they don't work on a short MEL-SYD flight but on a 10 hour flight it can be really annoying.
Hopefully, if many pax will let QF know about this problem, they will fix it.
OT similar problem with the QF headphones. On a recent flight the passenger next to me got really upset after he had to swap 3 pairs and the FA apologised and said it's an ongoing issue and the crew is frustrated about it as well. Then the CSM came and asked the passenger to raise this issue with QF because they listen to the pax more then they listen to the crew on this matters.

Yes the standard QF headphones were a part of the problem...on my 3rd Ipad I finally got the movie going but I could not hear a thing on the standard issue headphones, so I grabbed my trusty QC 15's and the sound came through loud and clear.

I can only imagine that the standard issue headphones did not have enough grunt!

Also the head phones in J appeared to be the same variety as the Y seats had, so may be they are just not suitable to drive an ipad.

You were supposed to get better headphones in J, similar size to your QC15 (albeit not similar quality ;)).
I suggest you also raise this issue with QF.
