Hoping for some wise advice from the group. No doubt this is not the first time that valuables have been left in a hotel safe - and mysteriously disappeared! 
The enquiry is on behalf of my sister, who discovered belatedly - several countries later on her trip - that she had left a pouch containing jewellery in a hotel room safe in Istanbul. An urgent enquiry to the hotel management resulted in a reply that Housekeeping had found the pouch shortly after my sister left the hotel but that they "did not have contact details" through which to advise her of the discovery. [We will set aside any discussion of hotel registration with address details, booking forms with address details etc!]
In her enquiry to the hotel, my sister listed the seven items of jewellery that had been in the pouch. However, according to the hotel management, only two of the seven items were in the pouch when it was located. They "suggested" that she may have left the other items elsewhere.
Obviously, she can make an insurance claim but the pieces were of sentimental value and her priority is to retrieve them, rather than to obtain compensation. [And yes, we accept that there are dangers in carrying such things when travelling but her trip was several months long and many of us like to "ring the changes" with accessories while travelling.)
At this stage, she is en route back to Australia but before she decides on follow up action on her return, it would be great if any AFFers could give some hints as to a course of action that would have the best possible outcome.
