What I don't quite get is that they were apparently drinking their duty free, on an airline that I'm pretty sure would have been serving alcohol to them if they asked...

They may have been refused alcohol if crew thought they were intoxicated.

Tom, actually I do that occasionally, but only on really long haul flights. For example on LAX-SYD, if I feel like a particular tipple, it is easier to take my own on board. Also, these days the cabin crew have a fairly set program of service that encourages everyone to fall asleep (serving hot chocolate, etc, with lights out). Rather than have a hostie come and give me a drink every so often while I watch a movie in the darkness, I prefer to pour my own. Less disruption for fellow pax.

But I have never felt the urge to then grasp my bottle and whack the guy next to me over the head.

Interesting. I'm not aware of many airlines that actually allow that other than Royal Brunei.

Mmmm. I don't often get to find out what happens after folks are led away upon arrival. One hears on a depressingly regular basis of trouble in the air but then what? One would think, and hope that the consequences are pretty serious, but who knows?

I was on a TG flight last year to BKK where a group of 'fun loving' aussies started out noisy and boisterous and by mid flight were drunk as skunks before the blood started flowing and the crew had to get seriously involved. The crew did as good a job as you could expect but were themselves manhandled to a fair degree which was just disgusting to see. I could only hope that their BKK holiday would be spent in a local lockup before being shipped home for some serious consequences ... but one wonders if there is ever much more than a slap on the wrist handed out.

The solution is obvious. The penalty applied should involve passport disqualification based on the offence committed. Minimum penalty applied for offences for flights departing, arriving or transiting through a particular sovereign airspace would be a mandatory 10-30 years. Obviously this is dependant on the seriousness of the offence. A high rage offence would involve threats of violence with the presence of alcohol, use or misuse of a prescribed medication, drug or illicit substance or any other natural or synthetic substance currently known or otherwise, that may or is likely to cause erratic behaviour, self harm, or any other threatening behaviour, to a passenger and or the general public when used contrary to medical direction or otherwise.

As school kids back in the day, we often purchased duty free alcohol which dependent on crew, was openly consumed between BNE-POM. One of my fav school holiday memories at the mature age of 13, was being referred to as "sir" to establish if I wanted a red or white with my meal. Red of course.
