China Southern to take up stake in QF?

For something that big to be only mention in a tiny bit in the article, makes me wonder whether its a mistake!

Either way i'd much rather EK take a stake over China Southern any day of the week!

China Southern is Asia's largest airline in fleet size and passengers carried. (at least according to wikipedia)

I've had good reports from friends travelling with them very recently. The same friends who also travel a lot on Emirates.

According to your link, China Eastern wins on both counts. China Southern takes it for pax kms flown however.

If it gives QF the capital to expand and renew the business, it would be a welcome development. Plus, I tend to think a China Southern stake would a) not be a controlling stake; and b) more likely to allow QF to develop itself rather than just marketing EK.

Saying that, I just hope it does not turn in to a China Southern subsidiary (if QF sales act were to be repealed) and secondly wouldn't want QF to move to coughteam (aka Skyteam)! :D

Flew china southern j class Sydney to Guangzhou return in May (looked at a QF code share ticket but it was $1000 more expensive). On time performance was cough ( 7 hours late leaving Sydney) but on board experience was very good. Fully flat seats. Good food. IFE pretty good. Staff English was so so on the way over but they had an Australian FA on the way back to do announcements. Guangzhou lounge was very good. Would I fly them again? Price is pretty compelling, product was good, challenging for my points /SC addiction.

I can just about picture flying China Southern in economy to get to BKK.

No thanks.

But looking at the trend, service quality for CZ is improving while we all know what QF is becoming. So eventually the line will cross? In 3? 5? years?

i doubt they can afford to take a stake in QF - their business is heavily dependent on China domestic traffic which is being eaten into by high speed rail substantially.

they have also been reporting losses this year and from what i have seen over the past few years are very susceptible to forex shocks when the government shifts the renminbi to USD rate
