Two - Russian (was born there) and Australian. Helps a lot travelling around the world. The Russian one works in lots of countries in South America where Australians have to enter on a visa or pay a reciprocity fee (Brazil, Argentina, Chile). Also handy for Turkey (no need to pay for the visa at the border), Vietnam (15 days visa free) and some other countries.

My wife has australian and romanian. The romanian comes in handy for her when in Europe but she gets a few looks from customs people and you can tell they are wondering what she is going to try and steal. It cracks me up every time.

Psst, wanna buy Crimea. It fell off the back of a tank

Two Aussies for me. One regular 10 yr one and a 2 yr 'concurrent' one for sending away for time intensive visas.

A question for the group, can I have two valid ordinary type Australian passports at the same time (not a special two year one as above.

The reason is that my current one has about 12 months to run and we are planning a trip next year that will require visas (and also a new passport as it won't have 6 months validity). I have to have a valid one for work at all times

If I apply for a new one now, does my old one stay useable until expiry or does it get cancelled when the new one is issued?

In answer to the thread question, I did have two passports at one time, both Australian. One personal and one official.

I did that last year. Entered Germany on my EU (British) passport and left Spain on my Aussie.
The Spanish official could not find my entry stamp so asked how I entered Spain. I replied it was ex Germany, he answered hmmm possibly thinking slack Germans then just waved me goodbye. I must have a look if he exit stamped my passport.
I'm beginning to wonder about you Buzzard! Ladder over the wall and fibs to Manuel!!! Have you starred on Border Security?

Your existing passport is cancelled when you lodge the renewal, not when your new one is issued.
My suggestion based on your stated need is that you have the passport office process the renewal and not the post office as this will be a day or two quicker.
You will however have to pay the priority fee ($108?) but get a new passport in ~ 48 hours.

Interesting that so far nobody has more than 3 from different countries.

I got my Aussie one, I too lazy to get my Croat passport despite having citizenship... I could get Bosnia & Herzegovina Citizenship and thus another passport...

The only reason I will eventually get my BiH citizenship and maybe another passport is for my father's inherited lands and to piss off my greedy relatives.

Because you only have 2 parents...
You can get one from mum, one from dad and one for where you were born I suppose.

Unless you buy citizenship of somewhere else...

I've got a friend who has 4 - Australian, US, Israel and Russia

he's not a frequent flyer though :-)

I probably should have said generally or normally...

I suppose the big 3 would be Aust, US and EU...that should get you most places with minimal hassles.

I have 2 out of 3, need to marry an American...

Nothing to stop your parents also being dual citizens and claiming citizenship by descent of all their countries.

Sounds familiar. ;) A Croatian passport might be useful to you now that it's part of the EU. I've only got one of those.

Btw, I'm not sure Croatia allows dual citizenship with another European country anymore (although I might be totally wrong). I have relatives (born in Bosnia, holding a Croatian passport and living in Germany) who had to choose. One of my cousins chose Croatian and had heaps of issues later on.

Aiming to have an Aussie passport in two or so years - just to make things easier. And then find a spouse with an exotic passport... ^^

You have to revoke all other citizenship's if you become a Croatian citizen by naturalization. Other than that it looks like it is permitted.
