Being a novice at buying/pooling FF points (AA 30% bonus points offer until June 13) - I am trying to get 3 adults dep SYD Dec 27 Arr LHR and either dep MUC or LHR Jan 24 arr SYD and also 2 adults dep SYD Dec 27 Arr LHR and either dep MUC or LHR Feb 3 arr SYD. Currently have 140,000 Velocity, 100,000 QFF, 20,000 Enrich. Wondered what could be achieved with buying AA points?

Flying economy is fine.

I've had a few hours over several days with no real joy (seems more expensive than best fare using BA rtn LHR).

Several weeks back I put three of the "Get 40-70% off business/first class'' groups out of the US to the test to see what they could do. Very poor result. Best was 15% off list price for 2 of 3 and 1 of 2 using Thai. One of the 3 groups would not bother unless I said how much I would pay (a bit like Kitchen companies refusing to give a quote unless you say what you're prepared to spend).

IS it really that hard a challenge that it has stumped the flight finding gurus?

Those dates are you problem.

I guess most put it into the too-hard basket.

They are close enough (especially the December dates) to peak travel time. Awards, if any existed, would likely have been snapped up months ago.

You really needed to be looking at booking back in January/February.

There's a forum for requesting assistance in finding flights: Flight Search Assistance

Secondly, you don't really have much in the way of points: Using QFF, then SYD-LHR return in Y for 1 person is 128,000 points.

That's true as far as the points go but with the current AA offer of purchase + 30% bonus (and 5 traveling or buying up points) and possibly transferring Citi points 250,000 etc then it should be feasible.

Putting it in the wrong area though does raise the degree of difficulty (I did say it was a challenge .)

If I was you I'd give up trying to use points for long haul economy, book BA and enrol in the AA Platinum challenge in December. For US$200 you'll each get Platinum until Feb 2016 and if you choose to return on BA15 you'll get double miles for that flight as it will take you over the 10,000 EQP requirement (therefore a total of about 33,000 each). If you departed from Munich and only transit LHR you'll also avoid APD.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

You won't find anything on FF points around these dates. That's the super busy peak season. Even the most available reward seats on Thai and the like (Star Alliance ones) have been snapped up. OneWorld reward seat availability is even more scarce - you might have a chance for one person if there is a cancellation and the reward seat goes back to inventory but absolutely no chance for 3 people
You will have to spend some cold hard cash....

MH is showing award availability for all of those dates in Y and J to/from LHR.

You could (potentially?) use a combination of your QF and bought AA points to book them (I've never used AA points to book MH Award seats).

Not sure how the $$ fall out for buying AA points to book Y MH Awards though, but seems like a bit of a waste to me. As others have said, maybe better to pay for the Y seats, keep your points for J.

Shame Citi don't transfer to Enrich, because 51k points SYD-LHR (plus $472 tax) in J is pretty tough to beat.
