Having just done VA's A330 J MEL-PER-MEL over the Easter break I was blown away with how good it was - it was a lot better than several intl J flights I've had. I was fortunate enough to avoid XFA and XFB and thought the 2-2-2 lie-flat was fantastic - the charcoal and white looks stunning. Food was excellent, staff were excellent, IFE was excellent - everything just worked. Yes it might be overkill for a 3-4 hour flight but I loved it. I WISH VA would start deploying these A330s to Asian destinations.
Which led me to question if there is a better domestic J anywhere in the world? Yes QF's A330 suites next year may be better but until then? There aren't many countries large enough geographically to warrant an intl-standard J class (US, Canada, China and Russia and the ones who come to mind) - how do they compare? If VA do have the worlds best J then if they can find some sort of 'ratings agency' to confirm this it would be a hell of a marketing tool.
Would VX First Class be about the only comparable competition?
