Just on the QF site and their 'cheap flights from Sydney' banner is advertising MEL for $145. Clicking on the link it is now year round, cheapest fare.

There has been gradual creep in the SYD-MEL fares... the $79 seem to have gone to ~$90... now $145.

That's testing the limits.

Time to check out VA then.

Much as I hate to say it but it looks like the downward spiral continues:!:

What other business could ask for and get a 50+% price hike overnight:?:

I did a sample 'weekend break' MEL-SYD return - in July, out Sat am and return Sun pm. DJ lite fare is $236 compared to QF's $290. no bags would be fine for a weekend get-away.

a cup of coffee and an apple (even if Neil perry inspired) isn't worth $64 to fly QF.

But interestingly DJ is sort of matching the QF fare with a $135 if you want bags.

Ouch that's quite an increase! On top of the points reduction, they really are shooting themselves in the feet.

May be they all got together over a lunch follow-up and said let's up the prices together ... since it is only the two of us in real terms and we own the faux-competitors (cough Jet* & Tiger) ?

Yes, I have noticed this as well.

I recently looked for SYD - BNE/OOL. Return, me and the wife, would have been over $600. We drove instead. (btw, VA wasn't much better either).

This still isn't as bad as it's been ex Canberra for the last several years - $149 is now the standard for CBR-SYD and $169 for CBR-MEL, even though the flights are shorter...

The lowest standard red e-deal has now cracked $300 OW for PER-BNE/SYD. I am baulking at that.......

Many, many businesses that offer a sale price one day and not the next. $95 was the last sale price for a SYD-MEL sector. Those fares aren't on sale today. The year round everyday far has been well over $100 for some time. I am confidently predicting tha Coles will be raising the prices of some groceries this week, by 100%, and people will just pay!

Sale ended, wait for next week's sale. I managed to pick up $105 ADL-SYD in the July school holidays. Standard year round QF fare is $159.

One could say welcome to reality

we are too used to paying peanuts for flying distances that are so vast...unrealistically low pricing was never going to stay.

That's always been view, $80 doesn't get you a nice dinner but it gets you an hour flight with a small meal?

With both major carriers losing millions its hardly a surprise..... still a lot cheaper that when i was a boy. I think its a good price.
