Apparently the erstwhile foreign minister has published memoirs of his brief stint in that role. He doesn't hold back...

Bob Carr’s Diary of a Foreign Minister dubbed ‘Bridget Carr’s Diary’ | News.com.au

“Business class. No edible food. No airline pyjamas,” Mr Carr notes sadly during a trans-Atlantic flight. “I lie in my tailored suit.”
On a Riyadh-London flight he is particularly savage: “Eating plastic — no ceramic — food, passengers lying in cribs, packed in business class, a design that owes a lot to the trans-Atlantic slave trade ...”

What a rough time he had of it.

Awww, poor guy, imagine how much a shock it would have been to his system had he been forced to fly Y like the very large majority of people do...

Imagine how he'd feel if he had to pay for it!

:D
I do think there is an element of truth to some of it though particularly this quote:

" After meeting former CIA director, US Army General David Petraeus and noting his “maniacal insistence on exercise”, Mr Carr introduces an anthropological theory.

“He is in the elite of Americans: the lean Americans,” he writes. “Outside a circle of the ruling elite, nobody in America is lean anymore.” "

did he not also drag along his missus for most of those flights - suffering x2 !

I can just imagine Bob: "Clearly Australia needs an 'Air Force 2'..."

If people travelling business class for work are not allowed to critique said business class, this site may as well close up shop.

But didn't anyone see the SMH article where the regional manager for SQ wrote Carr a letter apologising that First was not up to scratch? And the manager made particular mention of the lack of English subtitles on a Wagner Opera.

I submit the following m'lud.
Mr Carr, then a senator and minister, sometimes complained when unhappy, as an extract from a letter sent by a Singapore Airlines executive reveals.
”Specifically, I have taken note of the lack of English subtitles for the Wagner opera Siegfried,’’ wrote the executive after a stinging appraisal from Mr Carr on the airline’s in-flight entertainment system.

Wasn't he foreign minister for like 6 months?!

And you wouldn't believe the travel bill he racked up in that time.

Some may find it interesting that not only has the current minister spent considerably less than the former minister over the same amount of time but she also flew a well recognised LCC (not Jetstar).

LOL some beauties here 'I'm the best chairman I know': Bob Carr's Diary reveals former foreign minister's diva demands

“I’m the best chairman I know”); wearing Hermes ties; spinning through numerous media interviews (“I have more energy than 16 gladiators”) and from projecting his “masterly” baritone voice (“I am Foreign Minister… I soar above the mundane and serve my country.”)

It was “pathetic that the public service rules reduce me to that, an upgrade for a middle-power foreign minister,

Feeling so overjoyed when Henry Kissinger invited him to the exclusive millionaires’ retreat, Bohemian Grove, Carr confesses he “popped two Normison [sleeping tablets] to smother the excitement.”

“My ambition,” Mr Carr writes during a trip to Cairo, “[is] to have a concave abdomen defined by deep-cut obliques.”

“I want turkey, I want grass-fed beef … This is the new Fuhrer-directive.

He says similar things to many who post here. And my guess is many here don't pay for their fares either. At least he appears to have a sense of humour. Oops, I forgot the sad tall poppy syndrome we tend to have.

You make some good points turtlemichael, but nonetheless I think Bob should probably take a small part of his no doubt very generous parliamentary pension and use it to purchase a decent slice of perspective. :)

If we look at it from the perspective of most of us complaining about business or first class flights that we don't pay for but get as part of our work, then I think I have no problem with his complaints. But if we look at it from the perspective that we, the taxpayers, pay for his travel needs, then my tolerance threshold is quite different.

In the 1970s, Richard Nixon once flew commercial from Washington, DC, to Los Angeles to demonstrate the need for all Americans to economise in difficult times. What made that a farce though was that the plane that would have been Air Force One flew empty to California to pick him up, thus wasting more fuel and money than if he had simply taken that instead.

A fair assessment of J :)

Wonder what he flies on holidays when he uses his own real $$$?

Bob Carr - arrogant pig!

I attended Anzac Day Dawn Service at Villiers Brettoneux last year.

Carr ( as Foreign Minister) was our representative.

Ceremony finished and 5000 Australians are all set to board their buses and move on. Freezing cold!

Not allowed to. Carr must leave first. The @hole took over an hour to have coffee with the other countries reps and then wanted to shake hands with every Australian on his way out.

90 minutes after the completion of the Dawn Service I'm still waiting for this @hole to leave so that we can leave. I was physically restrained from giving the idiot a piece of my mind.

And he was unhappy in J? WTF?

JB
