Just wondering if anyone has done an international same day status run? I'm thinking of a MEL to AKL return basically staying airside transit in AKL and coming back. Would this cause problems coming back in Australia with customs/immigration? Has anyone done this type of thing?

PS -sorry for the major typos in the headline..."Same day international "status run"..." :-)

Sure, dozens of times ...no problems ... if anyone authorised to ask, asks, tell them you are on a status run with a cheap fare ... generally they lose interest (and their eyes may glaze over) ...

Thanks serfty...I will give it a go...it's a nice way to spend the day, check out some lounges and be "international" for a day. :-)

No problems at all.

After you come back from a simple AKL turn then it will be time for you to raise the stakes and try turning in SIN. ;)

I have done AKL and WLG without leaving airport although that was overnight transit.

I have done same day turnarounds in SIN, HKG, TPE and MNL without issues.

I've done a few and other than fretting about making connections on separate bookings all have gone smoothly:
MEL-AKL-SYD
MEL-DXB-SIN
BNE-DPS-SIN-MEL
BNE-MEL-LAX-BNE (although this wasn't technically a status run but just shows it can be done!)

I believe one AFFer who aviates for a living when renewing his ASIC was rung by AFP(?) and asked why he'd done so many short trips overseas - eg 60 minutes in RAR etc. :p

I have done BNE - AKL - BNE same day as part of a status run last year and no one really noticed.

Explained it was getting me over the line to Gold jut before a big USA trip... FA understood completely!!!
